6mmFlyRC Quick Build Profile F/A-18 Super Hornet (with plans)

Here is a new addition to the 6mmFlyRC quick build series; the F/A-18 Super Hornet. Like the MiG-29, the F-22 and the Su-37, it features the same type of simple tabbed construction for a quick and easy build.

It is intended to be flown with tailerons only, but it can easily be equipped with ailerons and rudders.

Data

Wing span: 73.5 cm (28.9 inches), 71.9 cm without wingtips (28.3 inches)
Length: 102.5 cm (40.4 inches)

Build instructions

Use the F-22 instruction manual until the 6mmFlyRC team releases the manual for this model. The construction steps are exactly the same.

Plans

Plans for this model in PDF, Google Sketchup, and AutoCad formats, can be downloaded from http://rc.tomhe.net/fa-18. The tiled plans are intended to be printed at 100 % centered.

Kit availability

This plane is available for purchase as a kit by 6mmFlyRC. It can also be purchased together with a power combo (motor, ESC, and propeller) from Grayson Hobby.

Consolidated information

Consolidated information on this model is available on my website.

Man tomhe, you need to slow down, I can't keep up!

Nice looking kit. Now let's see if I can get one cut and some pics and video off to 6mm.

OK, the Su-37 is almost done getting cut out. The F-18 SH is next.

Vey nice! I agree that at the rate these are coming out, there is no way too keep up. I am still having a blast flying the F-22.

The problem with the F-16 is that there is no easy way for a mid-mounted motor with the propeller in a slot. The motor would have to be mounted at the tail, and then the battery would have to be placed way forward. I'll think about it.

Very nice work Tomhe! I really enjoyed building and flying the F-22, and have been following the others (Mig-29, Su37).

I see you are using Google Sketchup. Is this the free version or the pro?

Modelling Idea; Burt Rutan once designed a light homebuilt plane called the Vari-viggen. Not sure I got the name correct, but this was a pusher prop tandem seat canard with retracts. This was prior to the Vari-eze which he is noted for. Just an idea that would need to go into a different thread.

Keep up the good work,
Ken

Well, I got the paper templates all cut out and taped together. Tomorrow I cut foam. Good news is, this time I will get all parts cut out from a single sheet of depron.

I'm thinking of using a Grayson Hobbies ParkJet motor combo in this and the Su-37 with an APC 6X5 prop.

I use the pro version, but the only pro feature I use is the AutoCad DXF export function.
