Well I have the canopy plate and canopy completed. After reading and thinking about Ron's post, relaxing a little. I started thinking about his question about the battery tray. So I did a little figuring. I designed the F22 around using a 3S3P Evolite 2100 setup. As such I made the battery tray able to accomodate the packs, and long enough to be able to move them 2 and 1/2 times there length forward or backwards. Now since some or most of you will not be running that setup. I tried to find what you folks would or could run. Here is a list of the batteries that will fit, their oriention and quantity.

Evolite 2100 3S - Horizontal - 6
EVO25 3300 3S - Horizontal - 2
EVO25 3300 4S - Vertical - 2
EVO25 3300 5S - Vertical - 2
EVO25 3700 3S - Horizontal - 2
EVO25 3700 4S - Vertical - 2
EVO25 3700 5S - Vertical - 2
EVO25 4350 3S - Horizontal - 1 - If tray is made longer
EVO25 4350 5S - Horizontal - 1 - If tray is made longer
EVO30 2000 3S - Horizontal - 4 - Maybe 6 if dimensions numbers are accurate
EVO30 3200 3S - Horizontal - 4
EVO30 3200 6S - Vertical - 2 - Should fit.
TP6000-3S3P - Horizontal - 1
TP6000-4S3P - Horizontal - 1
TP6000-5S3P - Horizontal - 1 - If tray is made longer
TP3300-3SXV - Horizontal - 2
TP3300-4SXV - Vertical - 2
TP3300-5SXV - Vertical - 2
TP3300-6SXV - Vertical - 2
TP3850-3SXV - Horizontal - 2
TP3850-4SXV - Vertical - 2
TP3850-5SXV - Vertical - 2



Now the battery tray is currently 310mm long. Unfortunately in order to make it longer I will need to decrease the width of the lower half as it already intersects the intake ducts. The nice thing is that the lower section is 74mm wide, so I could make the 4350 fit twice.


The real question is what capacity lipo's you folk's run on dual 70mm fan setups.

You would proberly use an typical HET twin setup
2 x het 6904 fanunit with 2W20
2 x TS54 ESC
2 x 4S1P 2200 Fullymax 25C lipo.

Absolutely, Nem you are doing a great job. Even if you get it 90% correct on your first attempt at F22 you will be way ahead with the 3D model.

I have used SolidWorks 3D (self taught hack) for a few years now on everything from airplanes to a shed for the backyard. What fun 3D modeling is.

I don't mess around with the 3200 to 3700 stuff since my stuff is mostly 5 or 6S, I use 5000 mah cells. 70 amp draws eat up the juice quick and a 2 1/2 minute flight isn't appealing to me.

There's little room in F-22s with gear for a tall brick pack, so I've had to use two packs taped together and wired in series.

Thanks for your help Ed. I was hoping that folks weren't using one huge pack. The more I design this jet, the more universal I am trying to make it for others. Today I will be working on the battery tray some more. I will also have to engineer a way to hold the batteries in place. Will post pics when I finish.

If you listen to anyones advice on the F-22 it should be Ed's. He has scratch F-22's already flying and they fly incredibly well. He maiden his latest F-22 at the AZ Electric Festival in Jan. It wt something like 10lbs, looked absolutely scale, and had amazing flight characteristics. Fast, Slow, it could do it all. Dont be so modest ED, I know your blushing

I just wish I had the time and talent to do what you, ED and all the others who actually scratch build thier planes because they want better. I barely get time to charge batteries and fly anymore.

yeah nem dont kill yourself with those smaller packs. 3700 would be min for most solid setups. and in 1p they wont be too big. or as Ed says just aim for 5000 and it will cover just about anything. heck gimme a single 5000 pack I can run twin 90 on it!

Barry, I seem to have gotten Ed's and MEV_F4's post confused together. So you guys are saying that I should be aiming for a single pack setup? In the 4-6S 5000 range.

Well, looking at the drawing, that shouldn't be a problem. I'll have to take a few steps back and modify the battery tray. But I'd rather do it now.

Is that plywood or balsa you are using?

My Raptor has frames of 1/8" and 1/4" lite ply from Balsa USA, they may be to heavy, just have to wait and see I guess.

Been thinking of making the top hatch very large, even including the wing, sort of like the JHH A-7. What do you think?

Thanks Ron,

The bulkheads, wing attachment rib and crutch peice are all lite-ply from Balsa USA. The servo trays and landing gears plates will be made from regular 1/8 plywood. The whole fuselage will be sheeted with 1/16 contest grade balsa. Still undecided about what to sheat the wings with. Tossed between just glassing them or using 1/16 contest grade balsa.

I am actually going to have a couple of hatches. Since everything is so spread out. The canopy will be removable for the batterys. Then another hatch over the fans and elevator/rudder servos. And 4 more for the vectoring nozzle servos.
