How often do you balance lipos?

I have a quick question that I'm sure has already been asked. When charging a lipo battery, how often do you put a balancer on it while charging?

Why not just leave it connected?

I use an FMA 4S. The battery is balanced every time I charge it.

I mean how often do you charge a lipo battery with the balancer on it. I have read where you need to balance the cells every time you charge and others say every 5 or 6 times.

True you will read both of these statements.
Truth is it depends on the LiPoly and how you care for it or abuse it. Top quality LiPolys which are not abused rarely need balancing. Most cheap LiPolys need balancing every charge. Any LiPoly that is abused needs balancing every charge.

Joe, this is what I do. I use a blinky balancer on my lipos every time I charge them.

Charles,
Thanks for your input. I guess for me the safe thing to do is balance everytime. I guess my main reason for asking this is to fine out if there is anything negative about balancing every time? Or is it good to give the lipos a break from balancing every once in a while?

It is easier on the batteries to balance them, so, just like a girlfriend or wife, having them in balance is a good thing.

Good luck finding one of THOSE that's balanced.

OK, I'll be the outlaw.

A couple of small 2S 1200 mAh packs have never been balanced in well over a year. They have taps, and are checked infrequently - they are fine.

My larger packs, 5S and 6S, have the original Tanic Packs JST taps - a bit of a pain to connect to. If needed, they are balanced, but that is not very often.

I use the e-Station BC-8 with built in balancer, balance every charge. No reason not to.

Like everydayflyer says, depends on the battery and how it has been used. If you are lucky and get perfectly matched cells, balancing is often not needed. however, if there is even a minor difference in the cells capacity, it is best to always balance else the lower capacity cells will become overcharged and could cause a big problem.

I understand more than 0.03v different indicates a need for balancing.
About balancers, the ones I see, discharge the cell to balance it with the others. That would seem to be adding to the number of discharge cycles. All that time balancing would also be discharging. Add up 100 cycles of balancing and how many full cycles did it equal ?
Based on all I have studied, the accurate individual cell charger would a better bet. That may increase cell life by independantly charging the cells to balance. Not by discharging them. If one can't be charged equally, something may be wrong with the pack.
I mean the type that charges all cells simultaneously.

EDIT :

An afterthought is the balancers may only discharge in a range from 1/4 to 1/2 C or so, an approximation. At .5C I understand the number of cycles increases to the thousands, so the discharging balancer probably does not have much effect on cell life.

I balance EVERY charge.

How hard is it to do? And are you willing to accept the consequences of not balancing (possibly burning down your house or shop)?

If they are that dangerous, then maybe a cell overvoltage alarm should be connected during charging. It should make a loud audible alarm if any cell goes over voltage and maybe a thermal alarm also. Well, probably throw in an expansion detector too.
I can supply DIY info on those, if I tried to sell them, I'd be swamped with competitors anyway.
