Slow Stick Myths
I am def considering a SS, but there are a few snags before I can get one, my dad has these questions to get cleared before I (maybe) here they are
#1 the wings are flimsy, and if they get dented, creased... the plane will NEVER fly the same, it will list to one side... (dude at LHS said that) #2 the plane looks real flimsy, and looks like it will fall apart at any time in flight (my dad said that after seeing a pic of it on Tower Hobbies) #3 it stalls easily and is hard to recover (heard that with a Slo-v so didn't know it it held true with it as well) #4 you can power the plane with Sub-c cells (my mini RC truck runs off of these, it is a 6 cell pack, and he thinks it can work, but I say it can't due to the weight, who is correct ) #5 HS-55 servos won't work with it (got 2 for a small plane but wansn't shure) #6 A few people said you CANT fly one at an indoor meet (like, big basketball court), is that true... that is with a stock system??? Thanks for bearing with my newbish questions , want to get flying on a GOOD platform

1. The wings are surprisingly durable. You aren't flying that fast and don't develop very much kinetic energy. THey are also readily available at reasonable prices, if you need replacements.
2. Yes it does look flimsy and it will come apart fairly easily, in a crash. But, it usually sustains little damage and goes back together just as easily. When you crash, the less mass you have, the better off you are. It's not going to come apart in flight. 3. It does tend to stall easily. But, it's a big gentle floater, what did you expect? Unless you're 5 feet from the ground, recovery isn't a big deal. 4. Weight is not your friend. Save the sub Cs for a 5 lb plane. 5. I use HS-55 servos for everything, SS included. You could use smaller ones, but that would limit their reuse capability. 6. An SS may be considered to be too large for some indoor venues. You may want to consider the Pico SS or Pico SS/F, which are somewhat smaller. |

#1 yes they are but they take a lot of abuse and if you reinforce them with a cf rod & packing tape they last for a long time
#2 it wont #3 it doesnt and will recover itself if trimed properly #4 your dad the SS can handle a lot of extra weight #5 yes they will #6 you can that is why it is called a SLOW stick Russ #1 if you do the 3* right 3* down engine mount mod you wont have this problem Last edited by zabond; Jan 17, 2008 at 01:25 AM. my slow stick is built lighter. i ditched the stock wire for the rud/ele control. and i used a small outrunner and a 2s 1320 lipo. that thing could fly in half a bb court. i've used a 2s 4000mah battery and the ss doesnt care. it definitely can hold weight. the wing is super strong considering its looks. i have gws pico servos on my ss and they dont have a problem. fun hovering the slow stick in a slight head wind.

ok, so it does sound prety cool for it, I have seen vids of it, runing (maybe stock) setups carring HEAVY stuff like cams.. and it still flies DARN SLOW, so that is why it looks so neat, yeah, I was thinking of renforcing the leading edge with packing tape, so as to make it a little stiffer (standard foamie guy trick), yeah, the light weight I liked as well, consideirng if I do crash into, er, ah, bystanders (aka, sister who does'nt listen to me to get out of the way with the cam, lol), so, looks prety cool, ok, thanks, def consiering one, um, cheapest place to find one at, my LHS price matches so that is why I ask
, ok, cheapest price, of all places, my LHS's own site, at $31.50, anyone got anything cheaper than that??? currious , BTW. I also have a 400 cc bb motor, can that work with it for xtra thrust????

If you have the motor there is no need to buy the full SS kit that comes with a motor. Instead get the slope glider version from Tower Hobbies for about ~$19.00. This is the same thing as the full kit less the motor.

When I took mine out of the box and saw the wing I said "Oh ....." this isn't going to last long. But once it goes together it gets surprisingly strong. I used 3M extreme packing tape (with fiberglass strands in it) on the leading and trailing edges of the wing and tail surfaces. I learned to fly with this plane, and it has been in at least 3 different trees, one of which I had to cut down with a chainsaw to get it out, and while it has some battle scars it flys as good as the day I got it. You can fly at stall speed all day long just a few feet above the ground and it will gently porpoise. It never wants to drop a wing and spin. Find the Ultimate Slow Stick tread and folks will tell you about motors. If you somehow totally destroyed the wing you can pick up another whole plane at Tower for 19 bucks plus shipping and transfer the electronics. Or you can by a wing and tail on Ebay for 10 bucks. Hard to go wrong either way.

I have the ss and let my 6yr old fly solo, then if he makes it to landing he hands back the controler for me to land (rare), the wing is simple to fix with the gws glue or 5min epox. the only weak spot was the motor mount when driven into the ground. I use Tyco 9.6v packs from his rc cars (AA style) but have used sub-c for a few tests. keeping it light does help on hard landings.
have fun. |

, I think the sub c cells are a BIT heavy for it, either that or the CG was off, prob both, will have to see though, hoping to give it some more tests tomorrow

The SS can haul sub-c packs, the trick is to get the landing gear to hold. If the AA's are energizer or that sort, you may need more cells to keep the voltage up.
On the wings, I video taped an SS clipping a steel light pole at WOT. The fuse bent a little, the wing was fine and the flight continued. |

Here's a nice little charger for NiHM batteries and will charge from 1 to 10 cells at 500 mA, 1200 mA, or 2500 mA and costs $30.

ok, so I found out that GWS told me to put the battery in the wrong spot
so, I will add 2 more cells to my battery, and try again, was able to, er, um, scoot it across a floor at an indoor meet, but, with the bat towards the front, it still didn't work , so I will also throw on my 400 C if I need more, er, um. weight on the front, the cells on my plane are who knows what batteries, had them lying around, I have heard the plane can 'fly' on 6 cells, er, um, they musta been lucky or somethin, because it shure as heck can't fly on 6 (AA may I add), so, what am I doing wrong, guess I got to mount the bat on the front, oh well, it comes with a $30 plane (more like $29.50 cause the dude at my LHS was nice and cut me a $2.00 brake ) so, hope to try again, this time with hopefully MORE LUCK, er, um, if I did decide to go BL, what is a good setup, def goin CSRC 11.1 2000 mah, 8c pack, as for brushless, thinking KMS stuff at hobby people???
