DonsRC KA20-22L technical "review"

*****TEST RE-DONE*****
(In my haste and late night excitement of playing with a new toy a left the motor poles at 12 whereas this motor has 14.)

I purchased one of these KA20-22L "Hacker Clones" from DonsRC here on the forums (Great guy to deal with). I was unable to really find any technical information for the motor so I figured I would share my findings. Don was having a great sale and for $34 with a Pentium18 ESC I just could not pass it up for a home made foamy project I have.

I "think" this motor is the same as the United Hobbies variant and is actually made by Danlions marketed under the Pulso name. The motor came with no markings to indicate actual manufacturer.

The motor is very very smooth seems very well made. On with the data.....

Flightpower EvoLite 1345mA 3S Lipo (Full Charge)
HobbyWing Pentium 18A ESC
GWS 10x6 HD

Using the Go Brushless thrust calculator, this yields an estimated Thrust at 200' ASL of 775.11 grams or 27.36 ounces.

Cheers,
Keith

Im sorry but I dont believe.
8680rpm is very much. 154watt out. with only 135 watts in.
maybe one problem with reading tests.

We'll I am pretty new at this so please educate me. I've only had my Eagle V3 data logger for a couple weeks but its not exactly rocket science. Do you think that the RPM sensor is reading an inaccurate number? I know the current is accurate as I also conducted the test with my Fluke before I had the Eagle Tree.

How did you derrive at 154 watts out?

Thanks for the insight and assistance.
Cheers,
Keith

I re-checked my setup in the software and I accidently left the poles at 12, whereas this motor has 14. This explains the higher RPM reading than actual.
Thanks for pointing that out!

Keith

I put your numbers into www.badcock.net and it came out at ~70% efficiency which sounds about right. I didn't save the file but I can do it again later if you want the link.

Thanks for the heads up on that Dr Kiwi.

I haven't had time to look at your spreadsheet this week, I have been fighting a cold and catching up at work. I'll get to it soon though!

Keith

I have four of these now (the UH offering) and am very pleased with them. My numbers look about the same as yours except for the most recent one I received. The new one must have a higher kV because it pulls 15.3A with a 1060HD. My others can swing a 1170HD or 11x4.7SF for just over 16A. The new one pushes 20A to swing those props--too much for this motor I think even in short bursts.

Here is the APC 10x5E data. I am surprised it did this much better than the GWS1060HD. I am used to seeing them a little closer.
Thrust at 200' asl is 927.67 grams or 32.75 ounces

Also here is a GWS EP-1147. Great thrust but I am not sure if this motor could handle extended WOT. Only time would tell. Does anyone know what the maximum safe RPM for this prop is?

I'd suggest about 5000-5500rpm... an 11x8 is even worse (maybe only 4500-5000rpm), before it starts to flutter badly.

Hmmm. I hadn't thought of that. It's supposed to be the 20-22L. That's what I ordered anyway, but there are no identifying markings on it. Hold on a second...

A quick comparo with one that I know to be an A20-22L shows them to be identical. I assume I'd be able to see a 2mm difference in case length.

EDIT: Nevermind. I just realized the "22" is for wire turns not case length. The 20-20L and 20-22L apparently have the same dimensions. Maybe UH did send the wrong motor.

If they did, just throw an APC 10x3.8 on there and enjoy it.

Blessings, Terry
