You could spend $100 and get a scorpion -8 and commander ESC. More than enough power for you. All depends on your budget.

That scropion -8 is overkill for 90% of the people here. You do not need 475watts of power to fly a 450 heli . Something around 350-400watts is better for most people. For general flying around and aeros, 300watts is plenty.

Im not sure which motor it is guys.. came on a used King2 it does have a Hobbywing pentium-18A ESC on it.
no markings at all on the motor though.
Black top silver outrunner and blue body.

previous owner said it was a 4300

looks like a 9 tooth brass pinion on it.

Well, first off, that ESC is not going to cut it. You will need a min of a 25amp ESC to do FFF and aeros and a motor to compliment it. This would also require you to keep your heli light which should be no problem using your Electronics from the King.

Without knowing the specs on the motor, I cannot say one way or the other.

So I guess what I am trying to say is, you can try it, but there is no way to know if it will work. The 18amp ESC will definatly not cut it.

There are plenty of "budget" motor/esc combos out there that will work.

I only recommend it becuase an Align 35A ESC / 430XL combo is the same price as the scorpion combo. Standard for a 450 heli.

If you are going to fly Scale bodies, then I would recommend something closer to the 350watt range in a motor. That means look for something that can handle 30amps continuous. Scorpion makes a good motor in this range.............

Find a decent 35amp+ ESC to go with it and you will have a nice foundation for you scale bodies.

So - any head-to-head comparisons with a comparably equipped Trex 450? I'd like to get one of these to add to the fleet (AXE EZ; King 2 90% blinged; HBFP).

I like the 100% Trex compatibility for LHS parts. My dilemma is, $99 for the frame is great, but I also like the Dragonus. The Dragonus is an almost universally well-reviewed machine, and that can be had for $158 with a BL motor included.

I'd be at about the same price point with an EXI and BL motor/ESC. But - Dragonus means mail-order parts again.

Long shot here - anybody with a Trex, EXI, AND a Dragonus?

AAAAGGGGHH...damn helis...

I haven't flown any other 450 helicopters than my Trex 450 SA. But I'd wager that all the 450 similar helicopters fly about the same as long as the weight distribution and rigidness is very similar. They all use the same principal mechanical functions. If the part fit and smoothness of ball joints and bearings are on par with each other, how can they fly much different from each other? We can put the same electronics and whatnot on any of these helicopters, so what difference is the frames and functions?

Now maybe an expert can tell the difference between aluminum and carbon fiber helicopters, but I'd bet that is just a simple difference in setup or electronics that they are feeling than actual difference of build materials.

The tail on mine was not built with locktight - had to rebuild it... The tail wouldn't tighten down enough, either, so I roughed up the boom where it attaches and make the "cinch gap" bigger.

Solid.

It's the cost of the kit that was a bargin for me. Even with the componets I have installed, I wouldn't consider my price over the top (my T-rex was ALOT more.) Anyway, even though I had issues out of box I would still recomend this heli
Just curious, what "issues" did you encounter? Mine's 9 flights old, and just had to tighten the tail up....

When you need to replace your boom, go with an Align CF one. They are a hair larger in diameter. Tail housing won't rotate and the boom won't slide in the block.
