My new 100g wing

Hi all

Made this one to take on holiday with me. One evening for the airframe, one evening to fit the bits. Cheap and cheerful but a lot of fun to fly. Video was the second flight, I wring it out a lot more now. I'll post plans and pics when I get home in a weeks time if anyone's interested.

Very nice. Looks like fun.
Please do share when you get back from vacation.

Great for taking along on camping trips too!

That is exactly what I have been looking for. Something small, light, agile, and aerobatic! Great job man. I would love to see plans for this wing.

OK, here's a very basic plan and some construction photos. I've thrown in some foam cutting pics of a Red Herring type wing, pusher style wing is just the same but with more sweep.

Here's the plan and template in zipped DXF form. Sorry I don't have a PDF converter.

Please tell me what you are using for cutting wire.
I have been toying with a similar idea and have two ways to provide power.
One is a soldering iron with the tip removed - 100w - the type that uses a resistive tip that is connected to the transformer with two compression nuts. The other that I might use is a variac transformer - it is called, I think, an autotransformer - lots of volts with low current - DIRECT FROM THE MAINS ( I think that is what you call it - we call it the wall outlet).
So now I have been looking around for some common material to use for the resistive cutting wire. Haven't yet found the right wire.
Thanks,
Walt

wjbite - you can use stainless steel fishing leader wire, .020 aircraft safety wire or rene wire. any of these in the .018" to .022" diameter will work great.

I use control line wire. I know some use guitar string. Nichrome wire will require less power to heat, but it's weaker so it can break if you use hand tension like this. You can get that from an old heater or hair drier.

For power supply I use a 24V transformer. Quick'n'nasty, use a 12V car battery in series with a 12V charger. I stated out that way, actually had a switch wired in, flipped one way I got 24V at the wire, flipped the other way the charger topped up the battery while on standby.

I'd suggest you only use the variac if it's feeding a stepdown transformer. Feeding full voltage into your cutting wire is potentially lethal.

And to anyone else reading this: ONLY WORK WITH MAINS VOLTAGE IF YOU'RE 100% SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING! That's why the charger+battery is a good idea.

Forgot to mention, fins are held on with foam double sided tape. One got knocked off in one of it's many midairs, and the plane flew no differently. So they're probably a bit large for normal flight, but I like them this way, they stop the plane sideslipping into the ground on low slow very tight turns. I also flew it with no fins at all, and it had a good bit of adverse yaw and wasn't comfortable to fly at all.

Should be 220mm. Is your printer set to landscape and page scaling turned off? Alternatively you might have to print your own using Profili

Tethered cutting only uses one template, at the root

Cheers
