Seabee hit it on the head....

AMYA Bylaws:

6.3 For yacht classes administered directly by the Association or by a class owners association, a one-time registration fee for new yachts and a yacht ownership transfer fee will be charged. The amount for these will be established by the Executive Board. Membership in a class owners association shall not require payment of any fees or assessments over and above those charged by the Association except for a nominal reimbursement for the costs involved in distributing ballots and ballot information to members of the association. Class owners associations may charge for additional goods or services provided. However, payment of such additional sums shall be voluntary and may not be construed as a requirement for membership in the association. (1995)

7.5 The Class Secretary or class owners association will handle yacht registrations and transfers and collect the required fees for these services. These fees may be retained by the Class Secretary or class owners association to defray administrative costs. (1995)

7.5.1 The Class Secretary shall provide an accounting of class funds and expenditures. The data shall be provided no later than December 1st but not earlier than November 1st and shall include all class activity for the year. It will then be formatted for publication in Model Yachting. (2003)

My number one priority is to repair this rift...then get us growing again...

I can't imagine a one time $7.00 is going to break the bank. Maybe someone with a big bank roll will pay for everyones fee...

This may be legal...but is it the right way to do it?

Need Sail Numbers?
or
Transfer Ownership

Registration requires a completed application and a $7.00 (USD) dollar donation to the Nirvana Class Owners Association - a non-profit, volunteer organization. All proceeds support the operation of this Nirvana COA website, your Model Yacht Club Pages and Nirvana sailing events.

Name ........................
Address .......................
City, State ......................
email .....................
Phone ....................
AMYA Number (if applicable) ......................
Existing Sail Number (transfer only) ..........................

Send your check for $7.00/ registration made out to:

Rodney Leathers
6358 Grand Oak Circle #101
Bradenton, Florida 34203
(941) 209-0066

Thank you. Your modest donation will defray the web hosting expenses and support the Nirvana Research and Development Team to publish vital information for all Nirvana sailboat owners.

Donation to his R&D, his website, his club pages, sailing events (what sailing events?)...what does any of this have to do with the expenses of registering AMYA boats?

These fees may be retained by the Class Secretary or class owners association to defray administrative costs.

Do the above meet the term "adminstrative costs"

Like I said...it MAY be legal to do this...but is it the right way to be spending our fees?

Not here to reinvent the wheel, but the AMYA policy of having a class secretary retain 100% of the fee charged to register a boat is in a word ridiculous. The money should be held in an account by the AMYA until such time as the secretary presents documentation of legitimate expenditures to conduct those activities as authorized by the AMYA rules.

How much could it cost to register a boat? How much time could it take? Not much is a fair answer. I am not saying the secretary shouldn't get reimbursed, simply normal expense documentation be presented and approved by a responsible individual perhaps the treasurer of the AMYA.

My Nirvana was assigned a number by Steve Lang when I got it and I have that documentation. I was an active member in the AMYA at the time and up until the non-sense that occurred in the resent past. I let my membership lapse for cause! Don't mind renewing it, but don't care for sending Mr. Leathers the $7 bucks - for what? to give me another number? Doesn't seem logical

I appreciate the AMYA's President's current attitude and responses to Seebee's questions, but don't feel sending Mr. Leathers any money is the right thing to do in principle.

With all due respect, I submit a change in this procedure needs to be made!
Thank you for your attention.
