cold sailing.

Just got back from a 3 hour sail at the cement pond. (They are going to drain it and turn into a skating rink on Monday)
1 1/2 hours in daylight, the rest in the dark.
6 degrees out, centigrade, (about 43 Fahrenheit), snow flurries expected tonight.
Wore winter stuff but still froze. Good breeze blowing though.

Just me and Harry, the rest of them are fair weather sailors.
We had some fun and a few laughs.

Footies

Ordered some footy plans today, looks like it might be a fun winter project.
Not a big investment, because they are so small, and I already have a few orange receivers lying around.

I'm going to build a Brando catboat Footy, and add some scale touches, trim, deck planking etc.

I never paid much attention to Footies before, but the local club has had a few Sunday morning "footy races" at the pond and some of them sail remarkably well!

The challenges will be:
Keeping it light.
Making it sail realistically.
Making it look good while doing so
Keeping the costs down.

These little boats are so small, you can keep one in the car at all times, and sail it wherever you happen to be.

At the end of this clip, the boat stops quickly

The u joint exploded, the arms that hold the center steel pivot spread from centrifugal force, enough to let 1 point out, tore it up good..

The Graupner jet, and the u joint are designed to run at a max of 20,000 rpm..not the 45,000 I'm spinning it at..

But, being old enough to know you gotta have more than 1 of anything, its good now, I sleeved the new u joint, and the plastic arms can no longer spread apart..didnt see that one coming..gettin old, I guess

My fast boats all use a direct or flex drive...no coupler. That looked a lot like the Kardan coupler I use in my tug, Chris Craft, fishing boat... etc

It does fine in those...but the'ye not trying to break the sound barrier either...

Crash, if were a kardan, it woulda worked fine..this is the graupner joint that comes with the jet..

Rick, my tug has a retrival boat I tow out with multiple plastic coated hooks on it, and it has a fork set up I can mount on the front of it, to deploy and retrieve the bouys we use..

Catching the gas boats is part of a normal day runnin em, they are upside down as much as water side down..

Some guys use casting, of a retrieval boat (full size) me, this is easier to carry..
