Free 3D CAD Software - Great For Modeling R/C Cars & . . .

Here's a very quick 3D model of an r/c car - lots of items missing but you get the idea. This CAD software, Google SketchUp, is really free and I think it's a great tool to play around with those that like to design stuff - like r/c cars, trucks, heli's, planes & so forth. This CAD program is also very useful for architectural, mechanical, civil, et cetera. It can be used with precise dimensions or you can just "eyeball it" and have lots of fun.

Get into the habit of making a component as soon as you've defined something - like a steering wheel, tire & wheel, shock absorber, motor, battery pack, et cetera. You can use a plug-in for creating coils (for shocks) and so forth - PM me and I'll provide more info - review the videos and tutorials on YouTube also for more info.

Here's the link to download the software - tell everyone about it - it's a blast:

In the software business, there are more and more freebies out there - many are even open source (for example, with open source software the programmer can add to or customize the application & create their own version - SketchUp is free, but not open source).

You can download several different versions of Linux (like Ubuntu, for example) & use Firefox for web browsing, Open Office for all the MS Office app's and spend zero, nothing. Your machine will operate much faster and you probably won't have any problems with viruses - or, just get a free virus software for Linux. Tons of other totally free Linux applications to select from as well including CAD s/w, of course.

& don't get lost perusing s/w here:

it's also not the full version.. I have the full version and there are more features... but the free version is more than adequate for playing around with

with the full version you can do stuff like this:

took me about four days

I did this car a few weeks ago - sort of bumping this thread to hopefully generate more interest in designing your own car, then actually build it - how cool would that be?

Well, I guess it would all depend on whether or not the car looked good, eh?

Looks more RX-7, mustang, and some totally sweet supercar with that deep fender flare in the rear with the open front

Open front = Mustang, the newer... And yeah, the supercar with a deep fender flare look.

I meant the open front of the fender flare. At least the deep ones like that. I see the muscle lines of the mustang, overhead is a little reminiscent of the RX-7, and the fenders and exotic lines are supercar.

Hey, just the thread I was looking for. I'm also into the designing aspect and just recently used a rapid prototyping machine to create some custom RC parts

I made them in solidworks, then it took 9 hours for the printer to print out all the parts (with a few copies in case I break them).

My shock tower design didn't work because I put form over function, but I will show you anyway. Also are pics of the other parts I made...I had a receiver with a completely broken box, and my steering servo had a clearance issue with the servo saver. All fixed now
