Question
How does governor mode work?

Governor mode is when the ESC holds the heli at a constant head speed no matter what the blade pitch, right? I have an ESC with governor mode because I'm too chicken to turn it on. Its a hobby wing esc and not a fancy cc esc so its just on or off.

My questions are more of using governor mode. I have this fear of when I put the ESC in governor mode, the heli will spool up to 100% when i plug in the battery. Does governor mode only kick in above a certain throttle setting from the TX? Basically, what are the steps to powering up the heli in governor mode?

The throttle setting determines the speed.
You plug in the battery with the flight mode set to normal, throttle off.
If the ESC has a slow start then you flip to idle up with a flat throttle curve.
Adjusting the % in the curve adjusts the head speed.

If the ESC does not have a slow start then your normal curve is used to spool up, after which you switch to idle up.

Experiment with the blades removed for safety!

Are you sure the H-wing does governor?
I know it is on the programming card, but AFAIK it is not implemented in the ESC.

I assumed it would because it was on the program card. I have this guy:

Maybe it doesn't.

You can see if it is working by just running up the motor out of the heli.
Don't do anything to your curves.
With it enabled if you load the motor up with your finger against the motor shaft it should hold speed.
When you release it it often oscillates in speed while it tries to re-establish the set speed.

Try it both enabled and disabled to see if there is any difference.
I know on my 18 amp H-wings it did not work, but I bought them a while ago.
(You can change the songs on them - a much more useful feature )

( It is easier to do this test with an outrunner motor because you can get more load due to the larger diameter)

Yeah. I was thinking of setting it to Jingle Bells for the holiday season. Way more useful than governor mode.
