The white LEDs are the brightest by far. Followed by blue, green, and red (in that approximate order). You do want to be concerned about weight on smaller planes. My 33" 3DHS Extra has 180 lights on it and I could definitely feel the weight after I added them. It still flies pretty good and is a little better in a breeze, but it was noticeable. I also had to add some bracing to the wings! The Hacker motor I had on it was OK before I put the lights on, after that vertical performance was noticeably retarded. I ended up putting a little bit bigger Motrolfly on it and it does fine with that.
There would be a number of ways you could "tone down the brightness" if you found it to be too much. A small GWS brushed ESC is one way. You could also probably do something with some diodes as well.
I sure enjoy the night flying in the hot summer! I've flown 10 times as much at night as I have in the day for the past few months! Lots o fun...
