Slow Stick Build
Hello all,
I want to build a Slow Stick. Here are the items I've selected for the build. Please indicate if you see any problems with the items selected or the vendors I've chosen. Please note: I realize there may be better items available, but I'm retired and money is at a priemum. So, please be gentle with your replacement recommendations. Plane Grand Wing System U.S.A. GWS Slow Stick Slope Glider Park Flyer EP ARF 46.3" Vendor = Caliber Hobby Item Link = http://www.caliberhobby.com/airplane...#slowstickkits Cost = $21.00 + $10.00 shipping Propeller GWS EP1047 Vendor = Caliber Hobby Item Link = http://www.caliberhobby.com/propellers.html Cost = $9.00 for 6 + $0.00 shipping (Included with Plane) Motor/ESC Combo 2410-09Y Outrunner Brushless Motor & 20 Amp ESC Vendor = Heads Up RC Item Link = http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...--Motor/Detail Cost = $28.00 + $2.00 shipping Servos TP SG90 9 gram Sub Micro Servo Vendor = Heads Up RC Item Link = http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...-SG90--/Detail Cost = $5.95 + $0.00 shipping (Included with Motor/ESC combo) Receiver Corona RS610 Full Range DSP (6 channel, single conversion, auto-detect shift) Vendor = BP Hobbies Item Link = http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id...1&pid=A3067644 Cost = $22.95 + $3.25 shipping Update: I bought another receiver, a LightFlightRC, 6 channel, Single Conversion. Vendor = LightFlight RC Item Link = http://lightflightrc.com (you'll have to navigate to the receivers, there's no direct link to them.) Cost = $15.95 with free shipping NOTE: This receiver appears to be exactly the same as the Corona 6 channel, single conversion receiver. See note below about crystal compatibility. Crystal Generic UM5 Receiver Crystal for Corona receiver Vendor = BP Hobbies Item Link = http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id=A3067655 Cost = $2.50 + $0.00 shipping (Included with Receiver) Update: Generic UM5 Receiver Crystal for LightFlight RC receiver Vendor = http://lightflightrc.com Item Link = http://lightflightrc.com (you'll have to navigate to the crystals, there's no direct link to them.) Cost = $2.50 + $2.00 shipping NOTE: The LightFlight RC crystals and the Corona crystals are the same and work in each of the receivers. They are both UM5 crystals. I already have batteries, charger, transmitter, glue, tape, and tools. I can make a prop saver, if I decide I need one. Can anyone think of anything I've forgotten? I think the price you have there for the props is for one prop. I don't know of any place you could get 6 for $1.66. If that's true though, I'll have to pick some up.
One thing I did notice, you were missing a battery. Seeing you've posted a lot of times, I would think you probably have some but just making sure. I use a Common Sense RC 1320mAh 3S LiPo pack and ParkZone 2200mAh 3S LiPo from my Stryker C. They seem to be just fine for now. I would also recommend some basswood to put in the fuse to strengthen it. Some CA or expoy as well as good velco to mount things like the ESC and receiver would be useful as well. Other than that, it seems like you have just about everything you need. Good luck with it! You'll have a lot of fun with it all. |

your'e all good, one thing though I havn't used the corona receivers. I'm a hitec guy, recently owning three berg receivers. I would love to save a little moola, give us a review, do you fly in-town (park) or are you out in the toolies with no interference? I tried the gws receivers, only to go glitchville and I don't have that much around here.

Thanks for the reply.
The link in my build list for the props doesn't have a picture, but here is another link to the same props (except they are orange) and there are 6 of them for the same price. http://www.southeastrc.com/Items/Std...okup=GWSEP1147 I guess I'll find out how many there are when I order them. As for the batteries, I have some already. I fly a Wing Dragon 4 using 9.6 volt, 1000 mAh NiMH batteries which I'll use on the Slow Stick. As for the basewood, I have a note to get some on my next trip to Home Depot. Glue, Velcro, Epoxy, Sumo, and about a dozen more types I already have. I'll keep posting here as things progress. Bill |

The field where I fly is only a mile or so from downtown. I don't know how much interference there might be there. Others have flown there and as far as I know there have been no incidences related to radio interference. The thing that grabbed my attention about the Corona receiver was the sensitivity which is supposed to be better than 2.0 microvolts as compared to the GWS R6NII receivers which have 5.0 microvolt sensitivity. I'll give as good of a report on the Corona receiver as I can without specialized equipment. Bill |

Okay, all items have been ordered and email conformations received.
I'll post back when each order is received. |

Welcome to the Slow Stick club... Looking forward to the finished product... Next thing we know, the sky over the Dix field grounds will be full of slow sticks flying all over the place and running in to each other - woohoo!!! Slow Stick air combat here we come.

You might want to strengthen the tail and correct the thrust line of the motor.
You might want to strenghten the tail and correct the thrust line of the motor. Check out these two threads. Good luck and have fun. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=609035

LittleG, this is starting to sound like fun. Air combat, huh?
georgefromvt, thanks for the links. I've read comments about whether or not the motor offset is really needed or not. The SS I've ordered is the slope glider and doesn't come with a motor mount, and the stick mount coming with the motor I ordered doesn't lend itself to adjustment. The 3 degree offset motor mount referenced in your second link is apparently not available any more. But, I'm a tinkerer, so I should be able to come up with something. |

Peter, so you've actually used one of the Corona receivers before?
Was it the single conversion one? When it goes out of range you said it just shuts down the servos, what about the ESC? Does it shut it down, too? I'd appreciate any more information you might have on this receiver. Thanks, Bill Build Update: All items are on the way and should be here around the first part of next week. UPS says the plane will get here on the 18th. |

Since this will be my first tractor plane I plan on using a prop saver, so, I'm going to add this little tidbit (I love adding tidbits) for a Homemade Prop Saver "O" Ring Installation Tool.
Also, make your "O" rings out of 3/8" (0.375") surgical tubing. Just use a razor blade or hobby knife to cut 1/8" rings. |

That link talks about using a prop saver on a 250 watt motor. It's kind of pushing that technology a bit once you are much past 100 watts.
Regular O-rings are not designed to stretch. When left on under tension for a long time they lose their elasticity. The surgical tubing works better. Doubling up certainly helps for higher power applications. fly |
