EPPiper, a BluCub2 FKm variation

I wanted a trainer, and I got a good indoor plane out of it as well.

All 9mm EPP sheet from SloperSteve @ SloFly.

A Blue Wonder on 2 or 3 cells, depending on how much coffee you had works fine

A wide range of cg, courtesy of the KFm1 (bottom step) airfoil. Start at 25% (2") and work your way back to 40% (3.2", or just at the step).

It does a great job of 'one-up-ing' my older BluCub design. The added wing area and slightly smaller size, along with lower weight with the lighter and cheaper equipment available today, along with the 'floaty feel' of EPP, make this a great slow flyer for relatively small areas, like the street in front of the house. For true small-field flying, like the front yard, around the trees, etc, build a SmartDart.

Anyway, here she is in all her glory!

AUW: 7oz w/ 3s450
Area: ~225sqin
Loading: 4.2oz/sqft

Edit: A newer tiled version was uploaded. Kits are available (pretty cheap ) from Twisted Hobbys

Way to go Gene!,

Looks like a winner! Plans look great too. Think I may have just enough of the 9mm stuff left over!

Hey Gene nice job mate, it looks tiny mate. With your landing gear and wing struts, have you used CF rods with steel ends, and cotton with CA I am building a Edge 540 kit up I bought from a mate who makes them in his factory, he Hot Wire cuts the wings to a beautiful scale look, puts CF rods down the center and then apoxys the two halves together, the end result is beautiful, the fuse is 20mm H-Grade EPP and just profile, The guys all generally fly without landing gear but I like it and am looking for a easy to make neat, light weight system to use. The same builder also made a Bi-Plane out of the same fuse pattern with KF wings and he made up a simmilar landing gear setup to what you have used only when he lands the cotton tends to break very easily so if you do something different please do tell.
By the way I have noticed a few of the scratch builds you and others have done out of "depron" look in photos to be smooth EPP sheets, is there new depron out there, I can only get hold of the usual grainless 2,3 and 6mm sheets.
Have you looked at my P-51 build latey its coming together nicely mate.
Anyway great fun and functional looking plane you have there and as always great plans. All the best mate
Regards Rod

Gene, Thanks so very much. I've admired this plane ever since you posted it on the EPP thread. The Cub is one of my all time favorite planes. You've done an incredible job on the plans. (Why am I not surprised?!) I haven't cut much foam lately and I'm really looking forward to this build. Hope I can put one together over the weekend if not before. Again, many thanks. Pat

PS Glad you started a new thread. This really looks like a real winner.

Dihedral?

Gene, it looks like you have a little dihedral on the plane you show in your pics (which looks like a R/E/T arrangement), but none on the plan (which appears to have ailerons). What is your recommendation on dihedral on a R/E/T setup? Thanks.

Spit: I normally use fiberglass rods, piano wire and dental floss with CA lashing, and hot glue to the foam. I break carbon rods the way I land

Some of the EPP is cut smoother than others, and some has smaller cells than others. The stuff from RCFoam is different than SloFly.

Pat: I did put about 1" of dihedral (each tip, or at the center on it's back) when I glued the landing gear / braces in. I did not mention it in the plans, since it really is a personal choice.

If you notice, on th plans I show aileron cutouts... optional, of course.

Firstshirt thanks for putting the pressure on Gene lol.
I am home today and logged in and saw this and have printed the plans already. Gene i should say sorry now because i am probably going to annoy you heaps with my questions.
Dekan i think this plane will be a real winner. By the way Dekan i was driving around yesterday and glanced over at a park and there was one of your EPP F22's flying around. I stopped and watched for a while, definately your EPP F22.

Gene this plane looks sweettttttttttt

Thanks
Rudolf

Gene bet i am the only one that has printed the plans 3 times and recut and taped and still can't get page 4 the tail to fit

Gene, the EPPiper was a blast to build. You really engineered those plans. Here are some quick pics. I need to get to bed. I'll try to get some decent pics after I add the motor, etc. Thanks so much. Pat

I've said this once before but to GPW, excellent design. Love the simplicity. My 5 year old son has been flying the CUB on FS1 since we got home today while dad effortlessly constructed his second plane. GPW's TR1 was his first taste and I couldn't resist the temptation to build your CUB and add ailerons for my little boy's next step. I sure hope he can pry the comtrolls out of my hands. LOL. Thanks for the plane and another incredible bonding session with my son. Keep it up, I'll post pics after my boy does a little decorating on Friday.

Dekan, personally, I like 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. It's a contact cement. Spay on both surfaces. Let it sit for around 4 min. Then join the two pieces. Works great on EEP, Bluecor, Depron. Pat
