Don't use too much 3M-77. That stuff can add a lot of weight quickly. I know that a light coat doesn't look as if it is enough, but it is. When I was building my e-plane from JK, I put on too much 3M-77 because I couldn't see it on the foam. It was there, but when I finished adding enough so that I could see it on the foam, I had turned my e-plane into a non-flying brick.

Move the battery foward and DONT put the receiver in front. If you move the battery far up enough..It will balance out right. I have done this before and it flys great. Also..These planes are very sensitve to weight..Keep it "light for flight" Also dont use a lot of strapping tape. You dont a lot with a carbon spar. Use very little expoxy and a tiny amounbt of spray glue. Even a fex ounces will make a HUGE difference. Trust me on this one!

Have Fun

Thanks guys, is the spray adhesive all that you need to join the wings together. I've triple read the instructions and see no mention of using epoxy.--Rob

Yes, just use the spray glue to join the wing halfs.
Also think about some servo savers. I've gone through 2 sets of servos on mine.
Ya, mount the reciever in the foam just off to the side, the battery killed one of those too.

1) Velcro the wingtips on, and they'll come off in a crash. My first set were epoxied on, but after a vicious attack from one of them 'zagi-eating trees', the epoxy had sheared clean off. It wasn't my fault.

2) DON'T colour your 'tips black. You'll never find them in the forest (guess how I found that one out).

3) Have fun bashing up the zagi. It won't complain.

Rob,

It looks like these guys covered most of it. My only recommendation would be to epoxy the wing halfs together. Also don't be afraid to cover the ship with EconoKote or UltraCote (or similar). The shrink film covering looks better than the tape and gives it a protective skin that can be re-ironed over and over after it gets banged up.

Good luck!

costath,

Taping the elevons is a procedure in the manual, not really a modification or a tip. Since they are balsa, the film covering works well to protect them.

I thought some of the purpose of the tape was to add strength. Does Ultracote do this also? Or is the carbon fiber (along with the CF rod) all that is needed for support?

Thanks,
Kenny

You need less strapping tape with a spar (a good, LONG spar, anyway) but you still need tape with the film covering.

Even with a spar, it is recommended that you follow the taping pattern in the book; only you can use 3/4 inch tape instead of 2 inches.

Well, it's pretty much done. Looking rather menacing in it's bright yellow, with purple tiger stripes. I was going to make it look really nice and P.C., but said what the hell and made it look rather evil. Just have a few more things to finish, then off to fly it. Thanks for all your help--Rob

Install a pair of WeMoTec electric ducted fans with brushless motors and 20+ cells, yeah, that's the ticket!

Guys...you left off one serious modification....
Elevons need to be Taped to prevent them from splitting...balsa is just too thin...Also, re-inforce the control horn mounts...

Sounds good, Rob. With the noise a Zagi makes...evil is better!

Kenny,

On my previous post, I was refering to the packing tape on the elevons not the strapping tape. Ben is correct about still using the strapping tape on the foam.
