Fastest Foam Plane Challenge « pdawg: 139.6mph » Full Results: Post #2

This thread started HERE which was inspired by THIS thread.

Here's the plan, I hope some people will play along:
  • Plane must be scratch built from flat foam, Depron, Elmers, Blue or Pink, e.t.c. is OK.
  • A minimal amount of wood and/or carbon fiber is acceptable for motor mounting, structural bracing and ailerons.
  • Cost of the power system, battery, ESC, motor, must be less than $100.
  • Proof of speed by video, either to be dopplered by a third party or of a radar gun.
  • Winner gets Bragging Rights and Eternal Admiration! Until somebody trumps his/her speed (:,

A few clarifications:
  • All glues are allowed, i.e. "Gorilla Glues", CA, Epoxy
  • "Glues" as bracing are not i.e. Epoxy or Fiberglass coatings
  • No objections have been made to packing tape and "Monokote" however.

More clarifications (May 14th, 2008) :
  • Video is provided not only to provided the wav file but to prove the plane is not coming out of a dive.
  • Sales prices are NOT allowed.
If the item is bought on sale, the full retail price must be used.
  • For parts bought used, the same as above applies.
  • "Price shopping" is allowed.
example: If an item is bought at the LHS for more than it's available online then the online price is acceptable.

That's about it I think.

I was thinking of 'setting a date' for entries, but since this really isn't a contest, lets just keep it an ongoing, open 'challenge' as you mentioned...

Should be cool... You planning on setting the bar high MiseryQ?

I'll get an initial speed test on my 19" Skyray w/ C20 and 3S800 this weekend. We do have video, and a radar gun. Will also run some of my 'other' motors on that same airframe before I start to get into my custom 'speed' plane.

My idea for the airframe 'built for speed' is going to take me awhile to complete so I'll get a 'starting point' this weekend with something I've already got...

so the $100 only includes battery, esc, and motor? that's easy. an arc motor/esc combo and HXT 2200 3S lipo would come in right at $100 and might make 500 watts with the right prop. that should push foam past the century mark; but i could be wrong. if this catches on, i'll spend the buckaroos to get in on the action. too bad x-mas is right around the corner. guess i gotta spend some $$$$ before i have to spend it on somebody else :P

Just an idea for an "Honorable mention" catagory, and since this is the Scratchbuilt (read:spend-thrift) forum, we should also keep track of the fastest, CHEAPEST aircraft as well... It's just an idea, mind you, but could end up really being worth the server space... LOL!!

I want to play too. How about an overall speed/cost ratio number as well as the ultimate speed? So if you hit 100 and spend $100, your ratio is 1. If you hit 100 and only spend $70, your ratio is 1.4. The higher the speed/cost ratio the better. 'Course highest speed reached still wins bragging rights, but the S/C ratio lets cheapskates like me feel competitive

The battery, as mentioned in the other thread, will be the equalizer.

I won't be the one setting the bar, my flying skills have much to be desired.

I did consider a mph/dollar "option".

Just to start it off here's my Y.A.D.W. clips.
  • UH FC 28-05 $5.95
  • ThunderPower 1320mAH 2s $36.95
  • Thunderbird 18 ESC $34.99
  • APC 6x4 sport prop approx $2.30
  • total: 77.89

After that I built a 24" pink foam Mugi to try out the hotter rewound motor, a HXT D9 Gen 2 1300mah battery and APC 4.2x4.0, it's all the LHS had in that size range, but it was destroyed on the 2nd flight.
It felt, and appeared to the fuel guys, to be faster than the Y.A.D.W. during it's brief flying time ):
I have a 26" Mugi ready to go with an APC 4.1x4.1 just as soon as I get a radio.
This power system comes in at $58.15.

-edit- Changed the battery. I was using a TP Prolite during the video.

I like this idea, but I think it still has to be a two-part result...

mph and mph/dollar ratio...

Otherwise someone spending $50 and going 60mph has a higher ratio than someone spending $100 and going 100mph which we all know is a harder feat to accomplish since as speed increases, power needs to increase exponentially...

So I'd vote for the ratio, but only with the overall speed as a primary gauge.

This is to be a speed contest; mph/$ is an entirely different contest. Power goes as cube of speed, so it takes 30% more power just to go 10% faster.

A $20 fling glider can attain instantaneous 80 mph by playing the shear winds.

I’ll depart, having imparted a few factoids for the day.

Happy landings,

Dennis

This is level flight - yes?

If no, then my Piece-of-Depron-Taped-to-A-Rock-and-Thrown-Off-A-Cliff Special will clean up both in the cost and speed categories.

Did I miss the election?

I thought it was MiseryQ who started the thread... and specified a dollar amount to keep it fair... and also considered the feasibility of a ratio idea...

Yeah, I was going to ask about a clarification for 'fastest foamie'. The Fastest Lawn Dart would need to be a different contest.
