Anyone KNow of some good thermal flyign wings?

I'd like something to break up my huge polyhedral/conventional tail fleet.

Foam or balsa, big or HLG, kit or ARF, i'd just like something different.

Mini-reviews, pics or vids would be great too!

I just bought a Zagi THL off the "For Sale" Forums last week. It's a 48" lightweight wing that is advertised as a thermaler (is that a word? )
According to the instructions the the AUW should be around 11.5 oz's, mine ended up around 12.5 using HS-81's a 4 cell (AAA Flat pack) battery and a Berg 4L RX. They explain how it can be bungee launched in the instructions but I'm just going to be using it as a light lift slope flier.

But I've blown the model up to 100" wingspan and will build two fuselage pods that the wings will bolt to, one with an electric motor and 7 Cell pack and the other as pure glider. I'll also be adding a small a parachute to the aft end of the pod which will be deployed on short final.

A friend of mine had a German kit called the SB13, about 80" span that had the chute and it was cool to see it deploy on final approach.

I have flown a Windlord for 25+ years and it could hang with Aqulias and Esprits. About 1200 squares at 100 inches. Check Ray Hays' web site for a picture and kit info, kitted by Ray. Plans are available, also. You will not be disapponted with it at a woodie TD contest.

Three flying wing HLGs that I know of are called: Aluah, Boomer, and Red Herring. You can find multiple threads on all three in the Hand Launch forum. All three are made of foam and I think all three are still being manufactured.

They lie!! Use it as a sloper - in 20Kts+ put a slab of sheet lead over the CG and fly in in a gale

Sorry to disagree with a previous poster but the Zagi THL will thermal. Getting the tow hook in the right spot is a bit tricky and too much pull on the histart will cause the Zagi to flutter. Besides, the hook gives me something to hang on to when I do take it to the slope. It's not a floater and it's a bit of a challenge but it will hang in lift. For histart launches, I put a small area of sandpaper on both sides of the wing at the trailing edge. Hang on to this - then let 'er rip.

I used to hand launch a CO8, it was actually pretty decent. It doesnt thermal like a modern DLG, but was better than the skeeter I had.

A buddy of mine flew a Windfreak for a few years before semi retiring to raise a family. It was an excellent thermalling wing.

I have a ZAGI THL that I purchased years ago and never built becuase I lived in flatland and never was convinced it would thermal well emough to justify the work putting it togethor.

I have sinced moved to Co and am thinking about putting it togethor as a sloper. I was planning on buying a carbon rod and inserting at the cg point as a spar for strength. Any other suggestions? And does this sound like a good idea?

The Zagi THL flies great as-is. If you really pay attention to the weight thay can be built quite light. Use light servos, and a 270 or smaller battery pack, and try running your CG back around 8" from the nose, with really small elevator throws.

I used to combat the Zagi LE, which also had no spar system, and they actually held up well. And even they would thermal in very light air on the slope.
