Y-Flyer concept

I've been keeping an eye on these quad and Y type UFO crafts, ?I think they are pretty neat machines.

the other night I had an idea for an ultra responsive 3D capable Y-flyer.

basically 3 complete hornet heli tail booms driven off a single main gear and single motor, all fully collective pitch with possible 3 blade rotors.

here are some very simple concept pictures for now.

this will be able to be controlled via standard 120 ccpm mixing :-)

Huh. Looks cool!

So, why the 4th servo?

:-) thanks,

it is only a very simple concept model currently, had to get the idea out of my head first.

3 servos are for changin the pitch on the 3 booms, the 4th servo is to rotate the 3rd boom for yaw control.

Ah! Tricky!

This idea sounds pretty sweet! Think it can fly well without some sort of computerized help?

it should fly like a standard ccpm CP helicopter :-) it WILL NOT self level !!.

but since it is CCPM and you could use the FS8 and Co-pilot system to make it self level ;-) My goal is to make this work with mostly off the shelf pre-made helicopter parts, just need 2-3 custom parts to make it work, plus the chassis plates of course.

Sounds awesome!

Any idea what it's gunna cost you in the end?

(Also, you could make different sized ones just using different heli size tail booms )

not sure baout costs yet, gonna buy 3 hornet 2 kits though to start with.

as far as using diffrent sized booms, well this is a mechanical "system" and each compnonent in the system to needs to be sized accordingly, but sure you could design a much larger base and use 90 size nitro heli tails with torque tubes and 105mm blades and...... hehe.

I want to build a nice light CP flying machine first.

Last night I decided to add a 4th tail boom, but it will still be a Y-Flyer, the 4th boom will make it truly acrobatic. I will make a new model as soon as I can get a chance.

1. CCPM 120 control
2. Standard Rudder control
3. 4 Servos
4. 3 Gyros
5. CSM Cyclock device
6. Spektrum AR6100 RX
7. Battery un-determined
8. Single outrunner motor running in Govenor mode

This platform will allow ANY acrobatic move that a real 3D helicopter can do

So, what's the 4th boom for?

Also, 3 gyros? Wowzers!

And what's a "CSM Cyclock" device?

4th boom is for insane 3D acrobatic control of this platform ;-)

CSM Cyclock http://www.rcmodels.org/csm/cyclock1.htm

and yes 3 gyros, 1 for elevator, 1 for aileron 1 for yaw. and this craft can be flown from any 4 channel TX because of the Cyclock device

"Insane 3D acrobatic control," eh? So, will it just be sticking out from one of the sides, then? And will it control yaw?

Man, that's a lot of electronics. Gunna make it expensive... Can you fly it without all of that stuff?

expensive ? lots of electronics ? I take offense to that take a look at the $1,000 + X-3D Quad ufo flyer in the multi rotor threads, that is expensive and has a LOT of electonrics, more specifically it has 4 Brushless motors, 4 custom high end Electronic speed controls, 3 gyros, etc......

this has 1 motor, 1 normal speed control, 2 cheap Rate gyros, 1 Heading Hold gyro, and 4 digital servos, 1 RX and 1 Cyclock.

I am building a very high performance machine. possibly it will get copied in china and mass produce with low quallity parts and e cheap, lol who knows,

just one of my very many crazy ideas..

I thought you were just doing this for fun Didn't realize it was your job or something...

Just wondering if there was a cheaper way to go about doing it. But, I guess, as you said, the rate gyros will be cheap. Guess I'll have to wait and see

Yeah you're right, just something for fun hehe, my main initiative is to make it less expensive then the X-3d that is out right now.

I just get overly excited sometimes
