power pod for gliders

Behold the "ElektroMotorAufsatz" (EMA) from Florian Schambeck Luftsporttechnik in Germany (http://motoraufsatz.de). These are designed to be mounted onto to any glider with a 3-piece bolt-on wing, but also can be mounted to gliders with plug-in wings with some modification.
Two versions are available:
The Basic edition, using an outrunner motor and swinging a 12x6 prop, is good for gliders up to 6 lbs on a 3S Lipo pack.
The Power edition, using a geared Lehner motor and swinging a 13x7 prop, is good for gliders up to 9 lbs also on 3S.
The EMAs provide simple and easy electric power assistance for many gliders without having to buy and outfit a separate electro fuselage. They eliminate the need for high-starts or winches, and allow glider pilots practice all aspects of their flying.
EMAs are available from SoaringUSA and may be on hand at the Visalia event this weekend. We'll also demo them at our Equinox Electric Event at Washougal, WA, this weekend (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=741109).

Hi Dieter,

Bob in Seattle here. I went to the Soaring USA sight and can't find the EMA's anywhere. I'd like to have one just for general purpose. What's the basic one cost ?

Bob, they probably have not yet arrived at SoaringUSA; I should have said "will be available." I brought these two back with me from Germany. With any luck, they arrive this week and Bob will have them in Visalia. If you're not going yourself, maybe one of the Seattlites can pick up one for you.

Bob, because I don't sell them, I don't know. They cost 198 Euros, and given the weak US$, I expect them to cost near $300 over here.

Michael, yes, Icare's site shows a photo of the power edition (same as is mounted on my Stork).

first flights

First flights revealed the following:
1. more power than expected; maybe the manufacturer's 300W figure is conservative.
2. Pitch-down under power is moderate; I needed only 15% up-elevator compensation.
With this compensation the plane flew safely out of my hand from a normal hand toss and climbed steadily. The power edition definitely provides more thrust than what would be needed for "normal" power assist in this type of plane (molded Stork-2 with all-up weight of about 5.5 lbs).
This means F3B pilots, for example, could use this unit to practice distance and speed tasks even with ballasted planes.

Hi Will in Wilson,

Bob in Seattle here. I don't think we will here from him untill he gets back from Visalia. I think they have a all purpose airfoil curve on them that fits just about anything.

I'm not in Visalia, Bob in Calif is... : )
Bob in Seattle, we'll demo both units at Washougal this Saturday, in case you want to see them in action.
Will, it'll fit the Supra.
Yuri, you are right. Actually I still have the fuselage, because I only managed to sell the drive train.
For those not looking for "unlimited vertical," these pods are a very economical choice compared to a fully-equipped electric fuselage.
