Are you looking for a micro sized plane to get into the indoor flying craze? Revell has come up with just the plane to fill that niche! This RTF has everything you need to get going except 6AA batteries. And with the built in charger, you can be flying in as little as 15 minutes after opening the box.

Kit Contents

Kit Includes:

  • plane
  • transmitter
  • owner’s manual

Kit Requires:

  • 6 AA batteries

Assembly

There really is no assembly for this RTF. Simply charge the plane, and use that time to read over the included instruction manual. It offers really good trimming advice, but mine flew great right out of the box without any trimming at all.

Wing

The wings of the Piloto are thin foam and are very stiff to be so small. The airfoil is one used by most indoor slow flyers today and does an excellent job of keeping the speed down and the lift up.

On the outboard trailing edge of the top wing panel are small trim tabs built in so that you can tweak the airfoil if you need to adjust the plane’s flying attitude. If you look closely you will see underneath each wing panel is a very tiny copper wire which is the antenna for the Piloto, and capable of a 100ft range.

Tail

The tail is constructed of the same thin foam as the main wings and also has trim tabs on the rudder and elevator. You will notice the very tiny magnetic accuator mounted on the rudder hinge line which gives you full left and right movement. It is centered by means of the rudder mounting material which seems to be very thin silicone rubber. It works great and has equal throw in both directions.

Fuselage and Radio

The fuselage consists of a foam forward part and a small carbon fiber rod for the rear. All the Piloto's electronics are sandwiched between the front fuselage sides. This arrangement helps keep the tail of the plane light, and in such a small plane as this with its very slow flying speeds, you don't need a very beefy fuselage. The weight of the Piloto is so little that head-on collisions with walls and the ground usually mean nothing more than a small break in flying time - just long enough for you to pick it back up and launch it again. It’s very robust for its size.

Charging

The Piloto comes RTF and needs nothing more than 6AA batteries and a charge via the transmitter’s onboard charging plug. It should take between 10 and 15 minutes for the Piloto to reach full charge. Make sure the plane and the transmitter are both off and plug the charge cord into the jack on the left side of the fuselage right behind the on/off switch and then switch on the transmitter. Both the red and green LEDs will light up. When the Piloto is fully charged, the red LED will go out. There is a tiny green LED mounted inside the Piloto's fuselage just in front of the on/off switch to let you know when the Piloto is on. The instructions state to wait at least 10 to 15 minutes after each flight before recharging the Piloto to give the motor time to cool down.

Flying

Basics

For the price, this plane is a terrific flyer. It has plenty of power and control and flight times just long enough to be fun without tiring the pilot.

Taking Off and Landing

Launch is a very gentle toss forward while applying power and letting the Piloto gently float away on another great flight. Landings are uneventful and easy. With a little practice, you can even catch the Piloto in your hand.

Is This For a Beginner?

YES! YES! YES! The Piloto was made for beginners and advanced pilots alike. Everyone can enjoy this plane. It's just a blast to fly.

Conclusion

The Revell Piloto would make an excellent gift for someone wanting to get into the wonderful world of indoor micro RC flying. Its small size makes finding a flying site easy, and it flies so well that it can be flown outdoors on calm evenings when there is no wind. Revell sure has a definite winner on its hands with the Piloto.

Pluses:

  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to fly.
  • Very robust and survives crashes with ease.
  • Long flight times.

Cons

  • None noted!

Thanks for the review. It looks a little tail heavy. Do you think it would fly better with some weight on the nose?

another agreement, tailheavy it is. its seems like almost all indoor fliers such as the Piloto, and Vapor, along with outher have that tail heavy look. is that because the with the nose up attitude it will fly slower? It bugs me to see that because it makes it look like the plane has barely enough power to stay up, and that it is struggeling to fly. Probably just a pet peeve. Great review though! and the price is right :]

The Piloto can be transformed from a dog into a nice flyer with two slices of a sharp knife: amputate the bottom wing next to the fuselage.

Thank you for the review.

I have a question, if I may. Forgive me if it was answered in the review and I missed it somehow.

Do you have proportional control over the rudder, or is if full left and right only?

For interest sake: The flying characteristics look almost identical to the Silverlit Palm-Z/Nano Hawk, but the Piloto does appear to be a tad faster. If it weighs 0.5 oz, that is more than twice the weight of the Palm-Z (~6g) and with only a quarter inch or so bigger wingspan that probably explains the extra speed.

From my understanding the plane needs to be tail heavy, as this helps achieve slower flight. It is the same with the Palm-Z, a power-off toss results in it flipping around like a piece of paper rather than gliding like a plane but they do fly nice and slow.

The 100ft range is definitely quite a bit better than the Palm-Z which only has about 15-20ft range.

I don't own one but then there is also the Avion that apparently has proportional rudder control and is easier to fly, but it also costs a whole lot more than either of these other 2 planes.

Again thanks for the review. There are a surprisingly large number of people interested in these micro RTF planes/toys it is good to see them also getting some review attention.

Pdiddy, I wouldn't be surprised if taking the bottom wing off helps. It helps a lot with the Aero Ace biplanes, but try it at own risk.

haha. ok thanks. i just figured that if you took the bottom wing off a biplane that half the lift would be lost, and once you cut it off, there is no turning back. thanks for the info!

Bob-
The rudder is pulse type, not proportional. Its centered by means of the silicone hinge material and then is either full right or full left when you move the stick. It seems to fly best when you just bump the stick instead of holding them full over. This can cause a nasty spiral into the ground.

Tail heavy? Yes slightly. Most of the indoor flyers seem to be this way. I believe this causes the plane to fly at a nose high attitude and slower than if the wings were level. This also causes the glide to be more close to the stall.

And yes, the range on this partiular model is excellent.

Glad you fellows are enjoying my review.
Thanks Ray

Silverlit X-twins are the same you need a bit of nose weight to get them flying right, i can't understand why they produce these models that are clearly aimed at beginners and kids , that puts them behind the 8 ball from the getgo with incorrect cg !!!!!???

X twins are great value and fly brilliantly once balanced.
Cutting the bottom wing off the X - TWIN bi- plane, not necessary, but does make it fly differently,so it may improve the Pilito as suggested ???
Try it, if you remove it carefully you can always glue it back ....

Propeller wash usually limits the pulse or bang actuator rudders so the higher the throttle setting the less rudder movement you'll get .

I would not remove the wing..If you don't like high alpha flight then adjust in down elevator.

No kidding! Removing the bottom wing will result in the Piloto flying slightly faster, but it will actually *fly* and not mush around in a nose-high attitude. When the bottom wing is removed, there is no need to adjust the trim or change the location of the CG; just do it and you will find a so-so flyer transformed into a neat flying machine!

Regards,
Bob J.
