I'm planning on running the stock fan with Don's 4800/EDO. I want to keep the mod as simple as possible but hopefully still see a more sprightly Viper.

You will see half the usual take-off run. The ability to do large loops from level flight etc.

I am assuming that you will also use the 40A Pentium ESC or equivalent.

The HL stock fan was a tight fit so I would only fit it once :-)

I flew my Viper this afternoon, and I am ready for better performance. Thanks for the heads-up about the fan fit. I'll be careful. And yes, I'll be running the 40A Pentium.

What battery do you run with this setup?

Thanks,
Sluggo

Good, thanks. One question, though: The 40A Pentium can handle 66A?

It's a good question.

The max draw I measured was 47A. It was not for long either because the pack delivery settled just below 40A.

What the battery is capable of and what we take out of it does not have to be the same. In fact, this Tenergy will deliver 110A in a short burst.

However, this pack in this set-up, never gets close to being hot even at WOT for the whole flight. Neither does the externally mounted ESC

Regards,

Eric H.

Another F/A-18 is in the sky!

I finally got around to assembling my F/A-18 "Red Vipor" last week. Since I'm relatively new to EDFs I decided to go with the stock setup and use my own radio (an old Hitec Laser 6 with a GWS R-4P Rx) instead of the included radio.

I did a quick maiden on Friday night to check it out and it flew very nicely. I've since logged four more flights and am beginning to get the "feel" of this plane. Since I'm not interested in speed, I am perfectly content with the stock setup. With a fresh battery pack it will loop from level flight and the roll rate is nice, especially when I switch the ailerons to high rates. Landings are simply a matter of lining up with the runway and reducing throttle. It sits down very easily and will slow down without wanting to stall.

All in all I'm very happy with this plane and really enjoy watching it carve up the sky.

modfly - Again, thanks for your input on the CoG location. Mine's a little nose heavy, but flies fine. I'm getting an easy 5-6 minutes of flight-time on the stock battery pack with enough juice left over for another circuit or two to line up for landings. Haven't hit the LVC yet.

Excellent report Aubard....best not to hit the stock hard LVC. The LVC in this plane hits at a very low voltage so there is the potential for puffing the lipo if flown to stock LVC. I installed a DE Smart SBEC in mine with soft LVC and it pulses the motor before I ever see the stock hard LVC.

modfly,

I think that's good advice. I plan to install a Park BEC before too long, just for the extra margin of safety.

Most of my flying is at half throttle (or a click or two above), so I'm getting decent flight-times and when I land the battery pack is only a bit warm, not even approaching hot.

I hope to get a couple more flights tonight, if the wife doesn't have too many chores lined up for me.

Aubard..use the DE Smart SBEC it has the soft LVC..the Park SBEC does not.

This SBEC will hit soft LVC before the stock hard LVC so you will never see the hard LVC.

Yes, I should have realized just what you said...max power/amps are not always being demanded from the battery. And, as the flight progresses, less is available anyway.

I looked in to the Tenergy's. Looks like a very good battery, not just for the Viper but also for my Power10/40A ESC modded PZ T-28. I plan on ordering a few 2200/30C's tonight.
