IMAX B6 -- Read this before you buy..

I received my IMAX B6 charger from unitedhobbies.com 2 weeks ago, and had done some testing.

I just want to give it a try. only around $60.
Due to the past experience with cheaper chargers from china, I did not put MUCH expectations before I purchased this item.
The cheaper charger works, but not working very good -- I will explain this later!

1. The Lipo balance mode (charge & storage) is slow ..... very slow.

2. Inaccurate reading !!
So far, I only tested on 3 cell lipos.

When charging the lipo, you can switch between the two screen:
i) shows the amp, voltage, time, mah charged
ii) shows the individual cell voltage.

The readings on screen i)
a. the charging amp has error ! --> the amount of error changes approaching the end of charging cycle. Initially, the error is a constant.
b. the total voltage has constant error !
c. the charged mah has error !

I placed a MedUSA Power Analyzer Pro between the battery and the charger.
This power meter is very accurate and I have compared this with my $200 multimeter.

Example:
When charing my lipo @ 3A, My MedUSA Power Analyzer says 2.72A. The total voltage reading on screen i) is 0.1v lower than my Power Analyzer.
When finished charging, the charger's reading says 2753mah charged, but my Power Analyzer says 2548mah charged.

BTW, TURN OFF the buzzer -- it is loud and ugly
That's the first thing I did to the charger when I powered it on.

The readings on screen ii)
I will give an example here:
I was charging my lipo in balanced mode.
cell1: 4.10v
cell2: 4.10v
cell3: 4.10v
cell4-6 not connected.

Beautiful, eh ?

But, on my expensive multi-meter:
cell1: 4.08v
cell2: 4.05v
cell3: 4.13v
The error seems like constant during the entire charging cycle.

Someone might say the error is little, but it does not fit my taste.

At the end of charging, my multi-meter reads:
cell1: 4.18v
cell2: 4.16v
cell3: 4.23v --> over 4.2

One more big error:
While the charger's reading on individual cells are:
cell1: 4.10v
cell2: 4.10v
cell3: 4.10v

I switched back to screen i), the total voltage was 12.18.
It dose not add up !!

Overall, 0.03V overcharging does not seem to hurt the cells immediately. I guess it is still safe.

I will keep it for secondary charing -- meaning -- I use it only when my better chargers are charing other lipos.

For people who thinks the errors are acceptable, go ahead. It will work.

But, for me, I will not buy it again, I will invest 3 times the money for a charger with accurate reading.

but but but it's cheap. Funny i had a talk with a guy at my field on wedsday. He showed me his Imax b5 with the nice aluminum case that comes with it. He says it's as good as my 902 from rcaccessories but his only cost $60. I tried to explain that they are not the same chargers, the bantan and the the imax are made in different countries. I told him that the imax jjust copied the display exactly so you would think they were the same. He answer....but it is so much cheaper!

I did say it "works", and "not expensive"....
....just... I want something has more accurate readings.

I think this message can help someone who are interested in this charger to make the decision.

People who do not mind the error readings, go ahead. It works.

But, this will be the one and the only charger I purchase from this manufacturer.

Maicon,
I believe the charger should work as long as it is not defective.
Just do NOT trust the numbers on the LCD screen without comparing it with at least a voltage meter.

Maicon,
That watt meter should be fine.
Initially, the reason I purchase medusa power analyzer pro is because I can connect it to my PC. Then, I found it very accurate comparing with the readings from my multimeter (DVM).

Yes the medusa is very good!
But here in Brazil is difficult to find!!
I would like to buy just one time! And buy a very good analyzer!
The meduza is the best !!!
So probably i'll buy in a america store!
But the problem is the taxes that i have to pay for it enter in brazil! more than 80% of the value!!!

Then I find that I go to buy one Flight Super Whatt-Meter 101 here i brazil!

This is not the first China-copy on the market...

As you said, they seldom have the quality, only the "look". Since LiPoes have small margins between "full charge" and "destroyed" this cheap gadget could be quite expensive in the long run.

I hate copies, especially when they could cause damages as this might be able to. The problem is a lot of people prefer cheap instead of good. So they are able to earn a lot of money out of pushing those lousy thing to the market.
Sometimes I buy some cheap crap just to test them, but I still have to find a copy close to the top-brands in quality. But I know a lot of people are satisfied with third class electronics. I know for sure a lot of people will defend those products. I won`t!
When you buy good gadgets after 3 years you have forgot the price but you still have the quality

This post makes my laugh. So many people wants to buy cheap products , looking for best quality. You got what you paid for. Jacky's review is good and I believe it is an affordable charger.

Many of us bought couples of unexpensive chargers so that we can fly on field continously. Who cares the 0.03V?

i think a good quality Li-poly charger must take the balance process slowly, maybe very slowly.
fast charging need big charging current and last more than battery need, that means some period your battery was in more than 4.2v condition, that will hurt your battey life.
there have no enough attention on fast charging hurt battery life, one reason is that the battery life depend on battery material( c),use way etc too.customer don't clear know which one broken the battery.
