Birdwing - A 60" Semi Scale Flying Wing

This project was intended to investigate the flying envelop of a 60" flying wing. Design goals are intended for all around flying wing on light wind slope and flat land thermal.

Wing planform is borrowed from Rajah Brooke's Birdwing Butterfly. Airfoil used is Pete Wick's PW1211's for F3K plank.

Following pictures and videos are for HLG and DLG performance. The second flight is a four minutes themal ride and I have to cut it short in order not to crach my computer. Stay to the end of the 2nd video for a hand catch. Hope you enjoy.

Detail Build log and slope performance can be found in slope forum.

Birdwing Sloping Video

Hi guys, Thanks for all your nice words.

Here is some more videos for viewers like you .

Just uploaded the slope soaring video at Slope Forum. Hope you enjoy.

As for plan, will post on RCGroups once SSDC contest is over.

A word of warning: Birdwing is more of a sloper than a DLG. Launch height is no comparison to regular DLG. But the flight envelop is pretty respectable with the PW1211 airfoil.

I thought of that, it's a nice plane to fly on the field, i dont care so much for the shorter flights. I can also slope it, and its quite compact. I really enjoy your planes. Keep up the wonderfull work!

The wind is pretty light to make any significant slope lift along the tree line. But those trees do gather a lot of thermals. To get to the the tree line, I have to catch a low level thermal, ride it up to the tree line and stays there for the big thermals to come.

Hi martseger63,

Thanks for your interest. Just need some final touch up for Birdwing plan.

See attachment for Rev 0.0 foam wing plan (not a printable version), PM me with your email ID and I'll send out the printable version over the weekend.

Will make Birdwing plan available 9/22/07 once SSDC is over. Sorry for the waiting and I hope you'll enjoy the build soon.

SSDC Voting Started

If you like what you see here, please pay a visit to SSDC voting thread to appreciate the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the seven SSDC finalists, and make an informed vote!

May be we could also have something similar here at DLG forum someday .....

Thanks,

Saw this plane fly first hand - it out performed all our wings in the light lift that day and looked very organic! Gets my vote!

What a neat design.

I've been working on for years actually an MS Excel spreadsheet for determining the balance location of a model.

I've used this program for about 15 years and it's been flawless.

I put in this wing as I wish to build it perhaps in the Spring and my data is quite close to Goede's plan.

Soon, I'll have a spreadsheet that will calculate the Geometric twist required for a swept wing, the formulas are from Dr Panknin and are very accurate as well.
