I've just started on mine. The Stumax fan has fitted in easily with a bit of dremel work.

I'm looking at possible speed controller locations for maximum cooling. Does anyone think the benefits of cutting a slot in the inlet and inserting the fins of the esc would be outweighed by the inefficiencies to the fan?

Neil I mounted my ESC outside the duct where COMP ARF indicates.
I mounted my CC 110 on top using a similar mounting scenario to what the manual shows.

Neil I have a question for you. It looks as if the flange on the duct can be shortened to move the fan forward, so the fan housing face would butt against the inside corner of the duct could you confirm this please.

You want absolutely smooth flow of air in the ducting.

For this reason you do not want the ESC mounted down into the ducting.

It will be easier to attach your thrust tube also!

Mines mounted upside down over a hole in the intake, I didnt put the heatsink down in the duct but rather flush with the top and the hole is cut to within a few mm of the size of the heatsink.Comes out barely above ambient after 5.5 minutes pushing 3.5Kw. It was clocked at 154mph without doing the "rollercoaster" but from about a 25 degree entry at WOT. I've gotten well over 100 flights on this controller with no issues whatsoever. ESC

Thanks for your post, your using the same controller I have. I have another in a Savex L-39 running 12S at 70A with similar cooling and I've also had no problems. I'm leaning towards this method.

Are you just pointing that out or am I missing something?
I'm looking to run 11S and I guess that will be around 80A.

Out of curiosity, Does the contender have a different design than the original? C-ARF lists the fan as the TAM TJ100 for the contender and for the original they still list the DS-75/Lehner combo?

With Stu's fan you do not want to cut into the ducting in my opinion.
That is the point I am making.
