If so what was the weight like. It says "iron on" but what else is required?

Thanks in advance ~

Iron on Carbon

John,

Used something similar a few years back on a CL plane for my Dad, I liked the idea but couldnt get the adhesive to stick the way it needed to to truly reinforce the wing I was trying to work on.

I ended up taking the material off of the adhesive and adhereing it with 20 minute Bob Smith Fininsh Cure to secure it to my liking.

The stuff I used was nothing more than CF tow with a strong adhsive "tape" stuck to it............I now just get the Bob Violett CF Tow and do the same thing I did back then if I want the extra strength the CF tow offers.

I was thinking of breaking this stuff out when I did my Tiger Moth last year but ended up just using the strapping tape.

This "iron on" CF tape is a group of fibers held together with a heat sensitive adhesive. The adhesive is NOT intended to provide significant strength, but only to maintain orientation of the fibers while tacking to the work surface. Once tacked down, the fibers need to be saturated with epoxy of CA for strength. If you've ever handled loose carbon fibers, you will understand why they do this. The material itself is very light and becomes extrememly stiff when empregnated. However, the final weight is more dependant on how much epoxy is used than the weight of the CF.

Thanks alot guys - yeah I was afraid about the weight of the epoxy for the CF. Is there any clear alternative to CF that is less in weight. I know CF is suposed to be very strong and light but the epoxy cover required seems to add just to much weight.

Hi John, Myself being a old Guillows Guy, I have used often, fiberglass shts, or maybe call them planks. I have a formica counter top that I wax & spray PVA. Then according to how much strength is needed I choose the wt. cloth. Most appl. use 2oz. cloth. I impregnate the clothe w/ finishing resin(epoxy) not laminating. Lam. resins are too flexable. The secret to lightness is the use of a dry 3" foam roller to remove excess resin. You should see the weave, w/ uniform satin finish. As in a spar I just squiggle rubberized CY on the spar and press it onto the glass. donot use accelerator as this weakens the rubb. CY. Then trim the glass around. This is done ofcourse after the glass sheet has cured. I flip the spar over and do the other side, if the strength is required.
This system I also use on balsa bulkheads, instead of using ply.
I make sheets ahead of time for future use, usually 18"by36".
Oh yea, I find that adhearing the part to the weave side is a stronger bond, as the other side is very smooth. Hope this helps.
