Success in Afghanistan!

Record opium crop production, record funding for the Taliban/AQ and a wonderful utilization of $600,000,000 for a counternarcotics program. The Taliban and al Quaida are on the rebound, bin Laden is still on the loose.

Another banner success for the Bush administration in Afghanistan!
Quote:
Under a scorching sun, thousands of Afghan men meandered among booths describing fish farms, the dairy business and drip-irrigation systems. A generator, cow and goat were raffled off. Wizened elders sat on carpets and sipped green tea. Some wealthy farmers seemed interested. Others seemed keen to attend what they saw as a picnic.

When Mr. Stoddard and Mr. Donohoe arrived, they walked through the festival surrounded by a three-man British and Australian security team armed with assault rifles. “Who won the cow? Who won the cow?” shouted Mr. Stoddard, 38, a burly former food broker from Provo, Utah.
I wonder what the neocon spin will be on this?

The neocon spin will probably be that Americans on both sides were behind the invasion of Afghanistan. The problem with that argument is that we didn't think the neocons would screw up the job so badly.

I'm waiting for someone to come by and explain why this isn't a troll, like they would have wailed were it a 'neocon' posting something unfavorable to the Democrats.

Not a troll, Rick. Simply a discussion of yet another banner success for the Bush administration: a record 6,100 metric tons of opium poppies last year, 92 percent of the world’s supply.

I'll tone the original post down a bit...

Great. You removed your statement that you "wonder what the neocon spin will be", putting my answer in a different light because I chose not to quote your post.

I thought the story was always that the silver lining to the Taliban cloud was their suppression of Opium.

I guess that was then, this is now.

While GB is on the hook for a lot, I don't think is goes as far a creating a new agricultural marketplace in Afghanistan though - new crops, new markets, new distribution - which is what it would take to lure the farmers from the opium trade.

if removing the taliban also requires curing the common cold - well, there is another failure for you.

perhaps overproduction will be their undoing

I hope none of you guys here actually thought they would put a stop to Opium production in Afganistan with the US occupation... Afterall, they are the worlds largest supplier and it is their #1 export.

War on Drugs is and has been a joke. A 70 billion dollar a year complete waste of taxpayer's money.

Opium is the only crop that will grow there that can possibly bring in money, it is the engine of their economy. Until it is replaced with another engine....

Remember how everyone talked about bombing them back into the stone age and the joke was they were already there? Still true.

nonsense. The key sentence in the article, i.e., the one that exposes one
more failure of Dumbya is the following:

Quote:
Rampant poverty, corruption among local officials, a Taliban resurgence and spreading lawlessness have turned the province into a narcotics juggernaut.
It's not that the Taliban are making opium, rather it is the failure of
this administration to create something real in Afghanistan...and in this
failure we see nothing out of the ordinary with these crooks...the usual
words that they spew for their credulous base, words that have no
basis in the reality created by this administration's incompetence.
