GUILLOW'S CESSNA 172 SKYHAWK conversion to electric.

Hi I just bought this model... see link.
What motor/esc/battery will power this plane?
What covering?
Any tips?

It would be difficult to give a good idea of what should be used for this conversion without having a look in the box. I've heard that the Guillows planes can come out quite heavy due to the grade of balsa included in the kit. If I had to guess...

Maybe a 280 or 300 size motor (larger maybe?), a 15amp speed control, 7 cell ~600maH battery, and I would definitely use Solite for the covering. When you get the kit take a look at the plans for the wing and try to get a good estimate of the wing area. From there try to get a good estimate of the weight of the wood/materials that will be used to complete the kit. If you can post information like that, the guys here will be able to help much more.

It looks as if its not going to be an easy conversion.
Would a switchback power plant with a 5 amp esc work?
Or will I need a 10 amp or higher?

I don't know if the 172 would fly well with the SB powerplant, a GWS EPS 300, but some people are using the GWS 5 amp esc with the 300. Supposedly it is underrated and good for up to 10 amps.

Sounds risky to me, I prefer to use esc's rated over what I think I will need. If it was me I'd use a 10 amp or higher.

What motor do you reccommend?
Maybe a dxa- s2(the twin motor)
the 5 amp would be able to handel it..but what about the plane?
Maybe a glow angine .061 norvel rc?

I've converted that model to electric before. One thing, it took me a LOOONG time to build (course of...8 months? I think?). The result was a spectacular looking model. Some big bits of advise... Don't go with the rubber banded on wing, reinforce the center wing panel, and use bolts or something on that order. I used the rubber bands on it and actually broke the center panel from the bands... One idea is to use patches of 1/64" ply (yes, it exists) sheeting to reinforce it. I used a speed 400, AUW was about 16-18 oz. I recomend using a high performance speed 300 and very light gear for a great result. The speed 400 made it just about too heavy, I used a direct drive 6x4 which also made it a bit too fast. I also believe the higher wing loading and prop speed gave it too high of a speed range, the CG never was easy enough to adjust and... crunch. Ailerons, Ailerons, Ailerons! You may want the rudder for the plane too, the torque really affects this model on takeoff, unless you use a smaller motor. A geared motor is likely the way to go, handlaunches and tall landing gear are a bare necessity as well. Aim for an AUW of 10-14 oz. Pick a setup that has a very high power to weight ratio, this was a very sensitive plane to me with the heavy equipment. I'll dig up a photo of it, it was gorgeous... Another thing, make each and every part of that model as clean and as streamlined as possible. Make the trailing edges of everything sharp, I look back at it and see things that would have made it a more of a dream to fly.

I got through the building part of converting one. In the bones, covered with tissue with a single coat of dope, the plane weighs over 12 oz. Yes, that's 12 oz without motor, gearbox, prop, batteries, servos, rx, or esc. That finished the possibility of conversion for me. It looks nice, though

I just wish electrons had some weight. That way as you fly your plane gets lighter. Kindof like the glows..did I just say that

The wing will use throttle cable for aileron controls from one servo
in the center.

The fuse/wing will use two blue Ny-rod outer tubes with
dowels (ala..Wing hold down style) to hold the plastic center
section to the main body. It will work.... or it won't! Stearing
nose wheel also.
