Getting the message out

Troy,

When I see others flying this week, I'll let them know. My new ducted fan (Wattage F-86) GOLD scheme became a lawn dart when it blended with the sun this weekend so no worries there. Does Doug know and did he come to the meeting? I'll let him know but Herb probably told him already.

Sorry I couldn't attend as I had a previous engagement to attend. Wanted to be there

Phil

Somebody should run a gas plane with a pipe first for them. Then when a electric goes up, they will see the difference.

Post the directions to the park. I might make the trip down (60 miles) to fly some micros and maybe the FM Gee-Bee... They are pretty quiet...

Flying Demo

I would recommend that only a relatively few smallish slow flying, quiet electric prop jobs be demonstrated. God forbid any plane should crash or come anywhere near a dog walker or other onlooker, seagull or hawk.Non-modelers are often apprehensive toward large fast flying aerobatic types. If possible, give the witnesses some stick time with a Tiger Moth or other stable small model that will fly hands off. I promise not to bring my Comet 54" Aeronca Chief with it's ear-shatering Mini-Olympus gearbox. Might bring my 2mph Marionette.

Nuther Suggestion

Post somebody near the frequency board to discretely tell those with potentially scary/loud electric prop jobs about the situation. Many won't have gotten the above messages and may bring Terrys and Zagis, business as usual.

I was in attendance & spoke also at the previous planning commission meeting, were the vote had been 4-0 to allow all electrics.

After many of us had given their little speech there yesterday, and the council members were just about ready to vote (probably close to unanimously), the great president of our club (the Harbor Soaring Society, which includes gliders and now also electrics) got up and said that "well electrics do make a little noise"...

I do not know if that statement was clumsy or intentional or what, but it just about reversed everything we had worked for before. The glider guys by trying to keep the field all for themselves are very close to shooting themselves in the foot, as they undoubtedly will be the next group to go...

Hope for flying field

Hi Herb,

From your post, it sounds like we shot ourselves in the foot at the last minute & a few glider guys got greedy?

Is that city council member still appearing with Troy this Saturday to 'evaluate' noise rules compliance for lack of a better term

Sounds like we still might have a chance?

There is a dispute between one homeowner, who has shot at gliders with a pellet gun was sued by the fliers and who subsequently sued to get all glider flying banned at this long time gliding site in a public park adjoining Hillcrest estates ( or whatever). Other neighboring homeowners have supported the fliers and have stated that they enjoy watching the gliders from their patios. What I can't understand is how, in this democratic society, one or two complaining homeowners can so easily threaten the pursuit of happiness and enjoyment of the majority so easlily. Somehow, homeowners complaining about the noise from Disneyland fireworks don't get their way.

The LN city council stated that they need to satifsy the irate homeowner and the many model fliers who use the public park so a flying permit system is being discussed to contol numbers flying at once. At least they didn't knee-jerk ban glider flying to protect their fannies. Yay city LN council members!!!!

Quieter flying

Troy,

I'm going to bring my quiet GWS Zero which runs on a lowly 6-cell 270maH pack.... Nothing else. I'm somewhat worried about the Zagi folks.... which are somewhat noisy (IMHO)

I like anything that flies, so I don't discriminate. Heck, I learned how to fly with a HOB 2x6 glider and slope soaring at the Estancia bluff before the lift became poor....

E-Challenged,

Were you reading the article on the front page of the OC Register this morning, or did you already know about this ruckus with the LN site?

I read the article in the Register this morning. I can understand both sides of the issue. People were flying their gliders there long before the houses were built, so they should have access to this site or someone should provide an alternate site nearby where they can fly their gliders (like that is going to happen!). However, I wouldn't be happy if my house was damaged repeatedly by gliders hitting it. There should be some way to protect the property owner's rights without shutting down or severely limiting access to the LN site.

E-Challenged, I'm sure lawyers have a lot to do with what is happening here. Disney has plenty of money and lawyers, plus influence over the city of Anaheim, so no homeowner is going to be successful in getting the fireworks shut down. The LN homeowners also have lawyers, and plenty of money, so they will use these resources to get their way if they can. Only superior monetary resources or plenty of public pressure on the city of LN will keep the flying site open.

That being said, we need to defend the Costa Mesa site. If they ban electrics it won't be long before gliders are not welcome too.

Boy, that meeting last night was quite a ride. What we need to do is, get some backing from the hobby retailers. Ultimately, they lose money when we lose sites! Notice how Hobby People's venue went from gas to electric when Mile Square was gone? What will happen if we go,radio control camels, perhaps? I'm so sick and tired of all the people interfering with such a wonderful hobby. Like our resident complainer, which is probably some miserable old lady that gets off on passing a little around! Any ways guys, if there is any thing I can do to help, let me know. I'll bring the 400 Piper Cub and leave the Ultimate bipe at home on Saturday! See you then, Mark-- BTW, If we police the area of trash, it'll be a feather in our caps.

I posted this in the jet forum:

There is a small chance that ANY member or the city council might come ANY time to the Fairview Park and examine the noise etc situation. None of them provided us with any schedule on when and where they might show up.

Two council members (an older blondish lady, and a younger black lady) voiced concerns about noise issues during the meeting, so they are obviously the likely candidates for an impromptu visit.

Most likely they will not announce their visit, nor will they appear escorted by anybody we know, and they could show up on saturday or sunday, or any other day of the week. But based just on likelyhood the weekend is a likely target, for the simple reasons that we told them there's a large number or electric fliers hanging out there during this period.

In any case qny date before the december city council meeting can present a potential problem if the noise level is not kept close to zero.
