Are GMS motors any good?

I'm looking on Tower, and these GMS motors are CHEAP! Are they any good? I really don't need high performance. I just fly sport planes like the Hangar-9 warbirds and such. Are these any good? or am going to be constantly cursing it trying to get it to run. So far, I have only used O.S. motors, so am I going to be able to put up with these?

I have a GMS .61 and it too is great, starts easy, and is a reliable running...engine.:-)

I have a GMS 32 on my SPAD and it runs like a champ and starts with one flick every time.

Actually, it runs so good I am thinking of getting their 1.20 size.

Same here. I think Dave may have made his decision to get the GMS 32 based on the fact that I've been using one in a SPAD for more than 2 years.

I have two .47's and they are great. Plenty of power and low reliable idle.

I've had two GMS 76 engines. Wonderful powerplants. Lots of power, quick break-in, good idle, ruggedly built. Well worth the coin, imo.

Thank you. That is nice to hear after a guy at my field gave me his "you get what you pay for" rant on these engines. He won't fly anything other than O.S., even Thunder Tiger (which I think is funny because TT and OS are the same engines!). I just want a reliable power-plant to make my Sunday sport flying fun.

This is where these forums are so valuable to us as consumers. You need to hear a variety of opinions, based on a wide variety of different experiences, to weed out the anomalies. In addition, some guys are stubborn in their biases, and even when confronted with someone who has had nothing but success, they will refuse to accept it. You can tell them by the way they look at the ground and shake their head rather than listening and absorbing.

I've run into a lot of guys who think OS engines are the only engines worth owning. I have a number of them, and they all run great. But, so do all of my Magnum engines. Try telling them that, though, and they pop a blood vessel trying to convince you how wrong you are. What a thing, eh? Some people.

I can tell you that I have heard many good things from a variety of people about GMS engines in my travels, and that my personal experiences with them have been very favorable. I have a NIB GMS 25 just waiting for its project (Minicraft Rivets scale pylon racer)to come to the surface. Buy with confidence.

I like Thunder Tiger engines just fine, but I would not say they are any more the same engine as an OS than the GMS is.
They are all pretty similar, but all of the parts are not interchangable.

As with radios, it's impossible to buy a BAD(ly designed) set. Poor examples do slip through with solder blobs (radio), Machining garbage in the crankcase (engines) and sloppy glue joints (ARFS). Aren't we lucky!!

My GMS 76 engine is just awful. Numerous flameouts, no power, inconsistent idle. Can't recommend them. After an entire season of trying to get it to operate properly I've given up and it's going into the garbage can. It's been replaced by an OS 75.
