Recommended Airfoil For Flying Wing?
Hi Folks:
I have a foam cutting bow and would like to make a small wing similar in concept to the Mini Speedwing. Can you recommend an appropriate airfoil I could download, make templates, and cut? The wing will be covered with packing tape in "the usual manner" for this type of model. Thanks in advance for offering your advice. Lee Smith |

I've heard the MH45 is very good for wings. I used the MH 43, I think it might be a little thinner, Wedgies use a modified MH43. If it is going to be small, and small power, why make it heavy using tape? A little tape for reinforcement, then some of that cheap craft paint makes for a light wing. Profili has like 1800 different airfoils to down load free.

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded Profili and printed the MH45. Looks like a neat program! Lee |

Here's the dimensions of a wing I made in the summer. Suprisingly stable for such a small plane.

Mike:
Those dimensions are very helpful and it is just about the exact size I envisioned for my little project. I have been to South Wales a couple of times while visiting Cliff Nancarrow of Sailplanes International in the late 80's. The slopes were beautiful and rarely have I ever been treated in so welcoming a manner by the general populace and by modellers in particular. When I was introduced as coming from Canada to learn slope aerobatics, there was no shortage a friendly advice and I came away with a firm grounding in slope aeros which I passed along to my buddies here. When the sun is shining, I can't recall a prettier spot than the hills of Wales. While I had a little difficulty with the dialect early on in my visit, having an English Grandmother eventually had me understanding most of the local lingo. My wife...of Austrian/Canadian background, never did get the drift of the conversation, so I would "translate" for her...LOL Regards, Lee Smith, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada |

Ohh, flying wings, I love it, I flew several comets, the last in electrics, I used the scale rib in a comet, but this rib give to the plane more speed, if you design an stright wing you need a reflex wing, for autostability, but if you will design an sweept wing, you can use any design of rib, even flat bottom or clark y, the autostability you get with the elevons

Hi Lee
Glad you enjoyed your visits to Wales, good to hear my fellow countrymen treated you well. With the dimensions above I found the centre of gravity was very forgiving but I played around with different sweep angles mostly increasing the sweep and found the C of G was too critical and the slightest alteration of battery position would make the wing unflyable. I made several of the above wings to those dimensions for friends and they all flew well. I also used thinner profiles which made them slightly quicker but they had zero glide, power off and less stable overall. Good luck with your mini delta. |

also have a look at this site, there's quite a bit of info on mini deltas there.

Those of you who have designed wings--you include the elevons in the chord calculation, correct?

Thats right, when you design a flying wing, you want to include the elevons in chord, even if elevons are flat, I saw a report of flying W. from Spanish, and they told if you design a sweept wing youn can choose any reb, even flat bottom, I confirmed that when flew my Komet Me- 163 A of 105 gms electric motor, not fly fast but glides like a bird

hi, Alfredo
i'm very interested, for a future project, in an electric ME-163A with good gliding ability. at this moment, i haven't found none that likes me enough. can you add some details about yours? thanks, |
