Printed Warbirds and more. Part 2
Well the origional thread for this is still back in the Kit forum due to its age but some had mentioned that it might see more interest if moved into its proper place.
Origional thread here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=342625 In anycase. The series of Printed warbirds is a great way to have a superb looking plane without great expense. Attached below are my copies of each of the designs. The P-40 and the Avenger I've reworked to clean up the prints. No changes other than flattening the wing (Yes flat wings, we have found that they work better for our flying styles. The Airfoil wings add some lift but as we do allot of 3D or combat we find the flat wings better for our preferences) Other than that though I've not changed the designs keeping the spirit of the origionals as intact as possible. I'm loading the JPEGs, and PDF's I've made of each. To build them Print, and trim. Use the prints to cut your foam. Build using carbon fiber in both the wing and the Fusulage. The usual method for the fusulage is to use a 3/32 Tube in the fusulage and to attach the 3/8ths motor mount stick on the end of the CF. I've redone the wing mounts on the planes I've redrawn for a flat wing. Most of the flyers I've flown with have found the Airfoil design added little to the lift and a fair bit to the effort it took to building the plane and even led to unbalanced wings when the bend of the airfoil was not evenly made. Make sure to check the Birddog posted by kdahlhaus on the bottom of page 2, Also check out the p-38aa post at the top of page 2 by bEbop. Edit for October 10: Leadfeather and Firetrapp have teamed up to add a great new dimension to this line of planes with thier F-22. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=753146 Make sure to see at the bottom of page one where leadfeather has managed to Thrust vector his motor. I've long been a fan of RCSuperPowers thrust vectored planes (I have one of his f-22 kits) but this design adds not only elevator thrust vectoring but rudder vectoring as well. Edit for May 8, 2008 Beaux has added the Hawker Tempest to the line of Warbirds available. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...32#post9716482 Edit for August 5, 2008 kdahlhaus has added a Polikarpov I-16 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...&postcount=631 December 2008 Some long overdue edits. JoseyWales has done a nice redition of the P-47 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...8#post11149568 BlazerB52 has contributed a number of planes on pages 57&58 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...724566&page=56 ChrisK has done a nice Hawker Sea Fury on Page 55 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...&postcount=825 JoseyWales has also done quite a bit of work redrawing the Japanese Zero at 300 DPI on Page 54 (Two versions) http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...724566&page=54 Last edited by MyDigitalParadis; Dec 16, 2008 at 03:11 PM. |

Now for the one's that I have thus far redrawn.
The avenger is scaled to print at 40 inch wing span. Printing the PDF at 90% will give a 36" wing. We found though that of all the planes in this series that the Avenger with a 40"+ wing to have the best glide capabilities and had good flight charactaristics including inverted flight. A few pictures of our local use of these great planes.
The prints have been very popular and my access to large format printers makes it very easy for me to produce the prints. |

This is a much shrunk version of my latest effort based on one of my favorite planes. I'm working on an origional plane design though before I release The design in general.

Yea that is something I'm hoping to work on adding top and bottom graphics. I'd like to come up with an EPP design for the full fusulage.

Thanks, but it's not my idea orgionally. I've just worked on cleaning them up as they are enlargements of small hand launched gliders that used to be printed on letter sized paper. I hope to see some new Pictures of planes built by others soon.

If these could be printed on something like Tyvek , might add a tremendous amount of strength to the airframe ...anybody tried that yet ???

you can keep things simple by printing them out to a size that you want, cut out the parts on any kind of material you want for your plane, then glue the printed paper onto it, making an instant cool looking war bird ^_^

1. Perhaps the parts could be rearranged for double-sided printing directly onto the material for the model, as in the MicroPitts and MicroMoth. 2. Another alternative, print onto tee-shirt transfer material, and iron the transfers directly onto the parts for the model. Again I din't start these designs just worked to clean them up. Sorry I'm just not one to steal someone elese thunder. That said thanks for the Kudos. See the origional thread for the who and what started all this. (Idamann, T1mux and WCFlyer)
The T-shirt idea is a great one if the foam can take the heat of the ironing. Reversing the images is easy enough. If someone tries it definitely post back the results. It would be much lighter than gluing on paper and the prints fade if left in the sun too much. |

Some of the planes originated from the printed peanut flyers at this site:
