Thank you! I am not sure of the weight. I was assume a little heavy. I used epoxy mostly then sprayed with Minnwax polyurethane. Then painted with Rustoleum spray bomb. I will have to see about weighing it. This is the easiest plane ever to catch. I can do it pretty consistently. Those loops were pretty low! I would say about 10' up. Almost lost it today. I switched models (DX7) and it did not bind or load the program right. Only had one elevon working. I gave it the wiggle test, must not have been paying attention! I flew in circles and landed in a tree to save it (kinda by choice ) then it fell down unscathed! Whew- Did a re-bind and it was off as usual. Kinda weird, I never had that happen before.

Hi all, I'm going to build this fantastic model too, but I'm a little bit confused about the right choice of the power system.
You know, original Steve Shumate's plans consider a motor that is no more in commerce and HK has no the exact parts, so I had to find out something similar.
As far as this is my first experience in build up foamies (I know that I started with a complex model), I would like to have your feedback about my choice:
-D2830-11 1000kv Brushless Motor
-Turnigy dlux 30A SBEC Brushless Speed Controller w/Data Logging (2s~4s)
-Turnigy 1500mAh 3S 20C Lipo Pack
-Master Airscrew propeller 7x4
Looking at your posts now I'm a little bit concerned about the motor and the lipo battery, I guess they're a little bit undersized.
About servos I choose the following:
Hitec HS-82MG Micro Metal Gear Servo (for the thrust vectoring)
Turnigy TG9 9g / 1.6kg / 0.12sec Micro Servo (for all others)
Last but not least: the plans foresee a carbon reinforcement in the wing as usual for foamies. From the drawings it is not clear to me if it is a rod or whatever, I decided to use a carbon fiber 3mm square tube, I guess that this could work.
I'm going to place the order, could you please give me a feedback about and suggestions as well?

1100kV is to low. You probably need something like 2200kV. Otherwise your propeller will be too big to be used in the slot. If you use smaller probsl, then it will not generated enough power.

If you are ordering from HK, get the 2826/6 2200kv outrunner and use it with a 6X4E prop and 30A ESC. This is the same motor sold by RCTimer. And don't get the Turnigy TG9 servos, get the HXT900 instead. And the battery you have chosen would be fine, but I'd look for something that is 25C or better. But 1500mAh is good.

If you are in the US, I have a Suppo 2212-6 2200kv motor and 30A ESC combo, which is basically the same motor at the HK Turnigy. I have the 6X4E props too.

This is the tried and true setup for these pusher jets, and works great!

Thank you crxmanpat for your feedback.
I changed like this:
D2826-6 2200kv Outrunner Motor
Hobby King 40A ESC 4A UBEC (due to max engine current)
ZIPPY Compact 2200mAh 3S 25C Lipo Pack
guess it is working now, please let me know about.

The only other thing I'd change is the servos. The HXT900s are way better than the Turnigy TG9s. I use them exclusively in all my builds.

Here is my sons I built for him with the Model Plane Foam. I maidened it yesterday and despite being grossly under-powered she flew well. New motors are ordered now to correct that. All we have to do is build me mine and paint them. Thanks Tom for a great design.

Looks good Mav! Get a good motor on ther and it is a grin.
Question, is there a way to set up rates and expo on the elevon programming? I was trying to tame it down for my son. Tried and it has no effect,

What radio are you using? If DX6i than just go into the dual rates and expo sub menu and set. I have everything set to the aileron switch, high rates set at 100% and lows set at 60% no expo at the moment but that will probably change.

The good 3d pilot I posted video of flying it a couple of pages back , has been practicing with it. Here's some low inverted harriers and just hucking around low in front and center...
