First Build

I toyed with the idea of buying depron but found a 50ft x 4ft fanfold pack of bluecore (skin on 1 side only) fanfold at my local Lowes for $30 (I got em to discount it cos it was a bit beat up ) and I have enough to play for a loooooong time

I've never worked with bluecore before and I was worried that it seems a bit floppy but that was when it was in a big sheet, now I've cut the pieces, I'm amazed at how strong and light this stuff is. I've taped it together with scotch tape and so far it weighs 128g

The HXT 28-26 motor is on its way plus a few other parts.

Idea:
Add an extra layer of foam to the front of the wings to make a pseudo airfoil section

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
<<<<<<<<0

Where <<< = the foam and direction of flight and 0 = a CF support.

Will this work or am I wasting valuable time and brainwaves?

Now I need to make a decision, ailerons or not?

Very fun to fly! it was tail heavy and no ailerons all tail, Maybe later!
Nice to know that the thrust vectoring works well What motor & prop are you using?

Gandalf_Sr: You can install the ailerons later if you're not happy with just the tailerons

I installed the motor and servos today. I need to buy some accessories for control rods tomorrow and then I'm really close to get this thing flying

I will probably do the ailerons with double servo linkage and maybe convert up to full ailerons later. Can anyone shed any light on the performance differences with/without ailerons?

What's your AUW weight at now Shadegrown?

Any thoughts on my wing-strengthening idea?

Airframe Build Finished

My bluecore pieces were too bendy so I decided to put carbon fiber strip along the front edges of the wings as well as a strip right across the wing which most folks appear to have added anyway. Looking at the way the wing and front section joined together, I decided to modify the main wing piece so that the 'V' points forwards rather than backwards (see pictures) and this allows the CF strips to come right to the center where the center pillar of the front vertical section forming a very strong central point while adding very little weight.

I also added sharpened CF stiffener rods that are inserted inside the rear part and then follow the line of the front of the rear elevator section (see pictures).

Bare airframe weighs 180g so far.

Yes thanks Bill, I got the PM. I still have a couple of questions:
1. Is the CofG 3.25 inches back from the front edge of the wing?
2. Should I bother with the rudder?
3. What is the AUW?

Thanks for the comments on the build, I was pleased with the way the CF additions went in and I have stopped considering the double wing idea for now.

I have 2 motors + ESCs on the way from UH, one is the HXT 28-26 that Shadegrown is using but hasn't actually tested yet. The other is a Hacker style 20-20 with slightly more power. My problem is that I have 2 standards of LiPo, 1300 mAH 10-15C ones that weigh 100g and 2200 mAH 25C ones that weigh 198g. My AUW is likely to be in the 300g range without battery so I could have a 400g or 500g AUW or buy another standard of battery.

I don't own a precision scale yet, so I don't have any idea what the weight is.

Thanks Bill.

I think I will add the rudders, I was figuring on making them work from a single servo although I do have those really light (and cheap) servos on the way from UH. Were you happy with the control surface area I can see on your pictures or would you make them bigger?

I also think I'll go for the bigger A20-20 motor and use the heavier 2200 battery.

Shadegrown, you could do a non-precision measurement of your AUW using a bathroom scale?

Ted

The amount of rudder I have is sufficient at slow speed and probably more than need for high speed. I could a little more as slow as I fly.

Hi

Great plan..!! Thanks for sharing

I'm thinking of scaling this down to 80% to make it easier to transport. Works out about 24" Span and 34" long. I have a 2409-12 delta and a 3c2200 mah lipo doing nothing at the moment, how do you guys think this will go using this combination ?

Thanks for advice
Frank

I'll try the rudders too, if somebody knows how I can get them working with only one servo Any ideas?
