Velkom/Model Motors Brushed Motor Info
I think this should be a thread where people post any data and uses for the relatively inexpensive, brushed ferrite and neodymium motors that are sold by Model Motors.
Recommendations for planes for these motors are welcome.
I don't have any personal experience with them, but would like to know how they can be used (cough E3D? cough cough ), as, I suspect, other people do.
Brushless is not the only solution, methinks.

I have recently replaced the Plettenberg HP 200-20-6 EDF motor in my Glockner F-86 sabre with a Model Motors VM 2020/20. Both motors are on 10 CP1700 cells in WeMoTec 480 Minifans.
I collected some data on both set-ups as follows:
Both motors are about the same length and diameter, but the VM weighs10 grammes less than the HP. The brushes are the same cross section.
Average Power/current/time for a run at full throttle down to tail off (@150 watts): HP 239 watts/18.3 Amps/240 secs; VM 241 watts/18.4 Amps/220 secs.
Power/current initially and at 30 secs: HP 299 watts/26 Amps; VM 330 watts/30 Amps and HP 264 watts/23.4 Amps; VM 274 watts/26 Amps.
I have flown the Sabre a number of times and the performance appears the same for both motors. The Model Motors 2020/20 cost about 2/3 the Plettenberg 200-20-6.

The larger neodym motors were recently discontinued (replaced by the AXIs), but you are right, all of the 20 series neodyms and the 24 series ferrites live on.
I have flown the 24/10, 24/12, and 24/16 in the same ElectroStreak. My favourite of the setups was the 24/16 with 10 RC1600 and a 9x7 giving good flights of over 7 minutes.
The furthest I pushed them was to use a 24/12 with the 10 cells and a 7x5 direct drive. The model did go well with around 380W, and there was no sign that the motor had been involved in anything out of the ordinary.
More recently we have used a 24/16 with a VMG 3:1 gearbox to turn a 14x7 on 16 cells in a model weighing about 6.5lb.

Electroscreamer sp400 EDF (201 sq in Wing area, weight 24-25oz)
Velkom 2014/27, MF480, 8 800ARs/CP1300s
14-15 oz thrust, 18-20 amps, 165 watts (full throttle)
The 2014/27 is a very good sp400-480 upgrade for EDFs. I have logged many flights on 8 cells with little brush wear. Very durable. Can probably be pushed to 9 cells.

velkom 24/10, Dymond D50 50A ESC, 8x1700aup, ernie thorpe inline 2.85:1 geabox (all metal, ~2oz!), and freudenthaler 14x10 folder. motocalc says ~34oz of thrust, on a 40oz AUW glider. 35 degree climbout, ~25A. This is all simulation, I hope to try it out this weekend or worst case in a week...
