Hello All

I have been meaning to make one for a while and I had the parts. Yesterday I decided to put this stuff together to make my first brushless motor

It was fairly easy to assemble:

Cut 3 long lengths of motor wire(coated)
Sand one end of each of the 3 wires
Solder the 3 wires together
Start winding the stator(I used 18 turns)
Make a base(I used a Futaba servo wheel and a small plastic adaptor)


Im not entirly sure that this thing will work, heck I dont even know if I did everthing correct(I do know the coil spacing and I read about soldering the 3 wires togegher). Please correct me if I screwed up.

I think I may buy a small used brushless controller to test this thing because I dont want to ruin my Schulze 18He

Very Kewl Carlo. Keep us up to date as it proceeds. Man, we have some really clever folks on this forum!

BTW - I want to publicly thank Carlo for a major favor he did me yesterday. I had a fully tricked-CP Hornet FS in the E-zone electric classified section and he suggested another realm(RunRyder). I posted it there. Shortly after that Carlo posted a reply to my add informing the viewers what the package would cost new and what a baaad boy it was. Within an hour I had five guys bidding actively and then it sold for my asking price.

THANK YOU CARLO!!! There are a lot of good folk here about but Carlo is in the top of the class in my book. Sorry about drifting off topic, but it's such a great change from some of the flame wars.

Carlo, that looks interesting... I curious as to where the magnets that would have to be in the can are??? There have to be magnets for the poles of the motor to pull to them...

It looks good though... What heli are you putting that in???

Thanks for the great comments guys.

The magnet is already in the outer casing, it is that black ring which can be seen in the scond picture in the group.

This motor came from a CD ROM(I think it was 30x), I just ripped it apart and put it back together with a different wind, added a base, and added a bering(refer to the pics).

Careful, the site mentioned by big Tim, although very good, does not deal with cd-rom outrunners (9teeth/12magnets) but lrk outrunners (12teeth/6coils/14magnets). lrk's and cd-rom have different winding diagrams! The site has lots of background info though.

Well I said to heck with it and I connected it to my Schulze 18He.

My settings were the same I used for my Hacker.

Mode 3 (medium timing)

Governor setting 2 (selected during startup)


The motor ran resonably well but I had to be above mid stick. The motor felt that it was running a little rough. I also tried the Gov setting 3(hard timing) and the motor didnt like that at all and it had a hard time maintaing the RPM.

I am not sure what will happen under load but at least it worked on the first try

Just tried the motor with a TMM 8 amp controller

and it works much better with a lot more RPM and power. I have read(I think Paul G. wrote reports on the Ikarus fourm) that the Castle Creations Phoenix is another good controller to use.

Well I added the finishing touches to my motor by attaching flexable wire to the stator wire(Aveox does the same to their motors).

I guess I have a brushless for my next model.

I have not yet tried it in my Hybrid Micro because I need a pinion and I was very busy this week. I'm going to place the order for the pinion(Ikarus 3.2mm 11 tooth) soon.

Just so you know I have tested the motor under a good amount of load. What I do is I take an index card and put the tip of the card on the part of the motor shaft that is sticking out of the magnet casing. I put the motor to full thottle and I press pretty firmly on the index card and hold it there until the index card gets too hot. From those test I have found that my motor with the Model Motors controller runs cool and the RPM doesnt drop too much under load. I am very pleased with the results and I am pretty sure that this motor will fly a micro heli.
