Well it's time to start the official thread on the new upcoming 55" Extra 300 SHP. Ben Fisher and Scott Stoops are once again joining forces to bring us one of the very best .40 sized 3D airplanes being offered on the market to date. Using many of the same design features found on their 47" Extra 300 SHP the all new 55" Extra 300 SHP is sure to thrill even the most experienced 3D pilot. The 55" SHP will incorporate the now famous "Stoops Wing" design which will offer rock solid harrier flight and unsurpassed in-flight characteristics.

The 55" SHP is designed around the all new Torque Revolution 4014/570 and Airboss Elite 80 speed controller. This power setup is capable of providing nearly 1500W on a plane that will be RTF under 5 lbs. The plane will fly great on most 5s sized battery packs and will need servos such as the Hitec 225MG for all the control surfaces.

3D Hobby Shop is currently accepting pre-orders on the all new 55" Extra 300 SHP which are expected to be available for shipping by August 15th. The 55" Extra 300 SHP will be offered at $199.99. There will also be combo packages added at a later date.

Looking good Tim. Looks like Ben and Scott did it again with this one. I hate to say it, but I'm almost afraid to buy it... I bought the 47" SHP, and since then, I cant say that I've flown any of my other planes in it's size/class, I take them with me to the field, but I only fly the SHP.. if the 55" is anything like it's little brother, then I may as well sell off some of my larger planes since I wont be flying them much after I get one of these since I'll be flying it all the time.

so the new torque motor can do 80+ amps?

I'm running mine at about 72A for about 1300W on APC 15x7E. Plenty, plenty of power for this airplane. The XOAR 15x8 pulls a little more amperage, Scott prefers that one at his higher alititude.

So far, the only people that have flown the 55" SHP are myself, Scott Stoops, and Josh(BoneDoc).

Tim was scheduled to fly the plane at SEFF, but that was the only plane I took on 72 mHz. I attempted to fly it on the first day, before radio impound was open, and it had a major loss of control and crash on takeoff. I suspect that the lack of radio impound played a part. So, Tim had to be content with a few flights on the 55" Katana. I don't think he minded so much.

I did indeed get to fly the Sledghammer (55" Kat) at SEFF and it flew fantastic. I am sure the 55" SHP will fly equally as well as the Kat. Ben's video shows it best in that the amount of power these planes have on the recommended power setup with a plane that will weigh in at less than 5 lbs. is simply incredible.

Have you ever wanted a 55" balsa foamy? I think that Ben and Scott's new 55" designs will be about as close as you will ever come.

That's the set-up in the video? Looks like you have great pull-out. About 8 minute flights?

I'll have to check my notes, but I think the set up in the video was actually a 14X7. With a 4000-4400 pack, I fly 9-10 minutes, because I just don't need very much throttle. The motor is fantastic, I'm extremely impressed with the package.

A couple of other notes:

Metal gear servos ONLY. These are large control surfaces. I'm flying HS-225MG's, I'm very happy. Scott is flying the 5245 digitals, he's happy with those. DO NOT attempt to use any kind of HS-81 or HS-85.

Be CAREFUL on your maiden - this airplane probably has more pitch rate than anything you have ever flown. The elevator is extremely powerful and you'll have to get used to it.

Everyone is going to love the harrier performance - this is what we have all been looking for. Driving this plane around the field in low harrier is easy. Dragging the tail is not going to be a big deal anymore, everyone will be doing it.

Sun.Flyer will be doing the official RCG review of the plane in a few more weeks. We'll also try to get something up on the other websites.

David - Yes, 5S. You can also use 4S on this power system with a 16" prop. Works well, although pullout is lazier. We'll be getting our low-cost 5S packs at about the same time we receive these airframes, so that might be a good choice.
