Col. Art Johnson plans P-38

My good buddy Mike started building this P-38 from plans over 10 years ago. He's decided to finish it now and I've talked him into pulling the OS 61 2-strokes out of it and converting it to electric power. He has purchased some Chinese motors and ESCs for it. Projected weight is 15 lbs plus finish and paint. Looking for approx. 1000 watts per side. I wish he had brought the wing so I could show the working fowler flaps.

It is projected to be airworthy in the Spring. He is flying one of the motors in a H9 Corsair as a testbed. I'll have to get him to send me some pictures of his progress, and I'll post them here.

Mike sent me a few pictures, a few of the flap mechanism before he closed up the wing.

Some new pictures. Glass and primer starting to go on. Looking for new motors, something to turn MAS 16x10 three bladers counter-rotating. He is also going to make his own spinners.

That's a very sweet looking '38.

In terms of motors- maybe talk to astro bob- perhaps a geared Astro 60? www.astroflight.com That airplane deserves a good motor or two.

at this pace is there any chance at all it will be done by warbirds? would be pretty cool to have a p-38, p-47, p-40, f6, b-17 all flying in formation with the loose formation electric warbird team!

Sam, I know he wants to run outrunner brushless motors.

Cody, you never know, it could always fly in primer!

Recieved an updated photo today... WOW, really looking like a P-38 now.
He purchased 350 KV motors, we ran one of them on 6S with the 16x10x3 blade masterairscrews. It pulled nearly 50 amps, that should make about 1050 watts per side. We still need to get a tach on it and calculate a pitch speed.
