Ivan Pettigrew Planes - Build Threads and Videos

First of all, if you're not familiar with Ivan Pettigrew or his plans, check out his website now! The link is below.

Ivan designs some very unique and beautiful aircraft and offers his plans for sale. He has a particular affinity for flying boats, but you will find all types on his site. In addition to his designs you will find a couple of his very educational essays concerning flying boat design and mutli-engine electric models.

All of his aircraft are known for being lightweight, and possessing scale flying characteristics. In short they fly quite gracefully as you will see in the videos posted below. Construction of his models harkens back to free-flight designs you may have encountered in the past, which is to say, simple, strong, and lightweight.

The links to the build threads below will give you a wealth of information on certain of his designs, as well as more generally serve to illustrate what is involved in building from plans. It's not that bad! You can do it. The results, as you can see, are well worth the effort.

If you peruse these pages and decide to build one of Ivan's aircraft, let us know! Start a thread or post some pictures. And if you do, send me a link and I'll add it here.

Another also! Check out the BIMBO thread for the UK Hall of Fame as well as additional "Spirit of Ivan" photos. (BIMBO stands for "British Ivan Modellers Building Organisation")

Even more also: Here is a link to an article about Ivan printed in the Canadian version of Model Airplane News in June 2013: The Sage of Chilliwack

Would you like to fly in British Columbia with Ivan and the rest of the gang? Scroll down or click here to see the dates for the twice-annual Chilliwack fly in.

Finally: Here is a video interview with Ivan discussing some of his models. For those who haven't had the chance to meet him, this gives you some idea of what he's like in person.

The Hall of Fame
Here are pictures of the various Ivan's planes that have been built by others, that I know about. Anyone who has built and flown a model from Ivan's designs qualifies for the Hall of Fame! Send me your picture and I'll post it here.

Chilliwack Threads

Twice each year in British Columbia, Canada, is a wonderful fly-in near the town of Chilliwack. Ivan routinely attends and unveils his new models. During the fly-in there is always a trip to the float pond for water-flying.

Various picture threads exist on RCGroups that detail this beautiful event; many of them include some great photos of Ivan's aircraft, either built by himself or others. You can spend a very enjoyable afternoon browsing through these pictures. And if you're lucky enough to live in western-North America, make a plan to go to Chilliwack and see all these planes in person!

Ok guys, there's a good start, let me know if I missed anything! I'd also like to post a single picture of everyone's Ivan's plane in the first post of this thread, so if you have one in mind you'd like me to use PM me, otherwise I'll be PMing you to ask permission to take one from your respective threads...

Tram, I edited my post above!

I picked up the original Mars from Jim last week and took it up to a long-planned camping trip to Jones lake. The light was poor but we got some decent shots. I'm awaiting another lot of pictures from a morning flight and the light should be much better.

All original equipment & Absolute Power 3rd gen (14C) 6s2p 4400 lipos for birdseed.

All photos taken by Keith Thomson w/Canon Digital Rebel & 75-300 lens.

We got back from the camping trip on Sunday and I was so pumped to fly the Mars again, we packed it up and went down to Fry's corner at RCFCBC for some evening flying.

I attempted a take-off grass, but no luck. A friend hand-launched it and it flew out of his hands gracefully. The light in these shots is still long, but better than the first lot at Jones Lake.

This model flies incredibly well. Ivan's differential thrust is great to play with... are stall turns scale Mars maneuvers?

All photos taken by Tom Nelson w/Canon Digital Rebel XTi & 75-300 lens.

One more set for now. These are from last year's trip to Jones Lake, with Ivan's original 100' Catalina. This model flies great (which of his doesn't?) and is fully amphibious as the photos show.

All original equipment with Absolute Power 3rd gen (14C) 6s2p 4400 lipos.

All photos taken by Troy Lester w/Canon Digital Rebel & 75-300 lens.

Tim, those are some drop-dead gorgeous photographs. Thanks for sharing.

And there you have it folks: if all the above doesn't inspire someone to build one of Ivan's designs, I don't know what will. It must be said that building a plane from scratch is a very rewarding and growthful experience, and if you choose one of Ivan's designs, your aircraft will look spectacular and fly like an absolute dream, as the folks here can attest. What's more, you will most certainly be the envy of all your mates at the flying field (or lake).

I do hope this serves to introduce some people to these magnificent designs, and as an encouragement to those still struggling through with their balsa bits!

Finally, I hope everyone will fee free to post here more pictures and stories of their successes with these models. The thread is yours! And I will try to keep the links above up-to-date.

Wayne White's Albatross

Here are a few photos of Wayne's Albatross taken at last month's Lily Pond float fly in near Bingham, Maine. He did a fantastic job building his Albatross and is also a great pilot.

(Also a few Wayne sent along to me for our club newsletter.)
