Any tips for my first 3D Flight?

My hobby-lobby Yak-55 is almost ready to go. Any tips for the first flight?

Hey Andrew

Like any other planes, start with the recommended CG, ensure all the control surfaces are going the right direction and the rest of the groundchecks.

Give the plane some altitude and get a feel of the plane. Get acquainted with the stalling speed (with enough altitude). Trim out the plane for the first few flights.

Once comfortable, go wild!!! I usually try anything new on a new plane around 3-4 mistakes high. Once I'm comfortable it's time to go lower and slower.

All these are rather subjective so go by your gut feel.

Cheers
Adnan

Only one important tip: Do not go down on the deck in the beginning! Height mean safe flying and your plane may last for some flights.
Else: Have a lot of fun

I have one of those and its still alive after a year and a half! Fly it first on 2 cells with about 60% expo. If you haven't flown light foamies then wait for a calm day. The Yak is a "thick" foamie for its size so its a little heavier than the typical 3mm plane. On 3 cells mine is a rocket and would scare a low time pilot. It is a good flying plane for the money.

I've been flying of about 2 and a half years, I own (currently) a GWS Tiger Moth 400, Parkzone Stryker, and a GWS slow flyer cub. And I used to have the originals like the slowstick and even an old timer called the Miss 2.

So, I'd say I'm ready for the 3D scene, and I'm quite good with the sim.

It shouldn't be a problem then, just make sure you have your expos in the 50-80 range on high rates.

The first maneuver, IMHO, the basis for all / a lot of 3D maneuvers is the harrier. That will teach you how to react in the post-stall condition. Hovering is just doing a stationary harrier into the wind.

Suggest you set low rates pretty mild for the first flight until you get familiar with the response. Things happen real fast on high rates.

Keep it high... I've still got my first 3Der after a year but I've only recently started trying to do anything but land below 30 feet.

The other advice is great too... take it slow like any other plane, get comfortable with regular flight and then open it up a bit.

Oh yeah, the flat plates don't really glide, so make sure you can handle a power-on landing, that is if you're not planning to just grab it out of a hover on the first flight

Make sure you go to the potty before the flight and then just get mad at it and fly.
