First scratch-build

Well, here is the progress so far on my first scratch-build. I'm guessing it will be ready to fly in a month or two (I'm slow).

60" wing span and 1 year of work so far.

Drive system should be 10 2400 sub-C's into a Kyosho Endoplasm in a custom built gearbox (had to learn how to use the milling machine & lathe... Must be the most expensive gearbox out there)

Outlines are based on plans by Adrian Paige, but the internals are a fair bit different.

Still need to mount the electronics (other than the embedded aileron servos) and lay-up the wheel-pants.

Very nicely done, I can't wait to see her in full race config. Can you post a pic of your gearbox. I"m sure everyone would love to see it.

Well, here is a front view. I don't have a pic with me of the gearbox itself. I'll try to remember to take one tonight.

Stunning! All the best with flying her.

You're in good company here - Keith Shaw, Adrian Page (though his prototypes are all glow powered), and Greg Gimlick spring to mind as those who've tamed this flying barrel.

I still haven't plucked up courage enough to electrocute the Page Aviation GeeBee Z kit, let alone the 60" R2

Good luck

Thanks,

Here are a couple pics of the gearbox I just took. It was my first try at making anything of significant substance on the mill, so it isn't so pretty, but I learned a bit, and it seems to run smoothly.

I have been severly chastised for failing to mention that this was a joint project of my WIFE and I. She did a lot of the original work cutting out stringers, frames, ribs, etc., as well as helping plot out the masking for the paint scheme.

Now perhaps she will stop hitting me...

Another week of cruddy weather, and we have decals, striping, cowl, and final painting done. Only thing left to do is make the wheel-pants.

Very nice. You have big cajones doing an r1/r2!
How many watts are you pulling and what do you plan to do about a prop? (pitch/dia?)
I hear the rep as a hard ship to fly is undeserved other than a high landing speed, IE: bring it in with some real grease!

Good Luck

Hi Mark,

Computer predictions have it pulling about 450 watts static. I don't have a watt meter, so I can't verify this (current gear ratio of about 6.2:1).

The prop on currently is a 16x10 APC, though, if I can, I would also like to try out an 18x12 (don't have one yet) as I would like to have more of the prop outside of that fuselage.

Thanks,
-Erik
