Scratchbuilt RC Albatross in progress

Hello all, here is my scratchbuilt Albatross in progress. It has a 2.3 meter wingspan, retractable gear, a video camera and a still camera as well. I plan to fly it at sea level and at 2000 meters so I'm trying to keep things light.

I'm very near completion of the basic construction and then I can move on to finish work.

So far everything you see weighs 5.9 lbs or 2700 grams - so I am l on my way to meeting my target weight between 7.8 and 10.4 lbs. or 3538 and 4717 grams

Once the entire model is sheeted with 1mm balsa, I will cover everything with 3/4 ounce fiberglass.

I've uploaded a progress video here:

I hope you enjoy it and any comments, tips, or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

-stef

Thanks guys for the nice comments

I'm thinking of the following color scheme, and my motor setup (which I'm hoping is correct!) is two Rimfire 1450's, with SS-45 escs, and two 11.1V 2100 mah 3s LiPos run in parallel.

Very practical and smart but if you wanted other colour full civi choices take a look at the Catalina island Seaplanes links.... superb engineering on the retracts I was watching this on RCU and about to put up a link but you had started here as well.

Stef,

I'm speechless! Absolutely beautiful work! Your color scheme is similar to the Albatross at the Chanute AFM here in Midwest US. Although the one at Chanute could use a fresh coat of paint...

Please keep us updated.

Stef,

What is the source of those prop hubs? Also, where did you get the build plans?

Thanks again all for the wonderful compliments!

Everything is built from scratch. I bought a vintage plastic model off Ebay, and found a great site and the net about the albatross:

http://www.eaa1000.av.org/pix/albatross/albatross.htm

I drew up all the plans myself, based off the plastic model and the article above - and if there is enough interest I'll make them available when I'm done. I plan to do the first flight mid September.

I based my retract geometry of the pictures in these articles, and did some basic cardboard mockups to get things just right. Then as you can see in the pics I built the gear all out of carbon tubing. It is quite strong and light.

I made a positive of the spinners from acrylic tubing and such, then made my negative mold from latex.

I've been emailing a small group of family and friends my progress, and am coming to the forums late, but if you want to peruse all the pics thus far, just go here and cruise around:

After seeing how many panels the scale model has, the real question is: are you going to do all the rivets?
