Here is my P40 with FW190D9

P40 is a great flyer.

All in all a good kit. Cowl needs to be stronger plastic, and I'm not a fan of the water transfer decals. They won't hold up, esp if you are a bit rough on the plane. I think for a plane this size the adheasive decals are better, but they need to improve the stick on these.

Mine is flying on about 160 watts and does fine. I did'nt think the foam spinner would stay on but so far it has.

Cheers--Stacker

Flew and landed the P-40 sucessfully over the weekend with a Dualsky XM2834CA-7, 1250kV motor spinning an APC 10x5E prop. This is a nice and powerful 28mm BL motor that is easily stick mounted using a GWS BL motor mount. Control throws were Elevator: 7mm, Ailerons: 11 mm (as recommended by ken in this forum). CG was set at 48 mm from the leading edge. This set-up was a major improvement from my maiden.

Thanks Ken I didn't know that

Actually at WOT the propeller made a not so healthy sound but I thought something was not properly balanced. Any way I mostly flew at half throttle so maybe I got lucky.

If I replace the prop with the APC 9x4.7 thin electric what should I expect regarding performance. You see I was very happy with the 9x4.7 SF...

I use an APC 9 x 6 Thin Electric on my EPO GWS-40 and the perfomance is good, but not in the unlimited vertical class. I find that the APC Thin Electrics have similar performance to the APC Slowflys of the same dimentions, but because they are stiffer they run better at high power levels.

My flew great but is really low on power with the stock motor- I guess I will try a different motor - any one tried a Grayson hobby BL-2212/13 in this bird?
I also have a eflight 450 available - not sure which to try ?
any suggestions? I am using 3/s 1350 pack pushed all the way back due to balance because of the aftermarket spinner.

Paint match for the stock paint job -- ???

Can anyone tell me the brand/paint name for a good match with the stock paint job provided by GWS ??

I have been very pleased with my P-40 using a Tower Pro 2409-12T motor and a GWS 9X5 prop. The motor was drawing too much current when using the provided three blade prop.

Thanks all,

Pete2

The Tamiya Acrylic Paint, XF-62 - Olive Drab, was the best I could get to match the fuselage for touch up work.

I used Americana water based craft paint from Jo-Ann's. Light Avocado and Desert Sand.

Pat,
P40 looks great! Could you tell which plastic spinner you used for the 3 blader? Think I may upgade mine from the foam because of ballance issues.

Stacker,

Thanks for the compliment! I wish it still looked the same though. A while back it had a head on collision with a light pole. I hit the actual light cover dead on.

The spinner was a standard DuBro 3" 3-blader. I used the GWS 10X6X3 prop, and I had to trim the openings slightly to get the prop to fit correctly.

Pete The 2409-12 is my all time favorite motor for the 1st gen GWS birds and used them in my GWS P-38. I considdered using one in my FW190 (same size as your P-40) but didn't think it would have the grunt needed. You say "pleased" - can you elaborate?

Jim -- Pleased -- ?? --- Well, I GUESS SO !!!

I have used the Tower Pro 2409-12T on 4 ea. GWS P-38's, (I love the sound the P-38 makes when using GWS 8X4 props on a diving WOT low pass) 2 ea. GWS Corsairs, the GWS P-40, and the GWS AT-6 Texan. They wear lilke iron. I have not burnt one up yet, and I have really punished them! I buy them at "http://www.headsuprc.com". I stick-mount them as shown in the diagram after drilling 4 holes which are tapped with a 4-40 thread.

--- Don't know what more to say except that I LOVE THEM !!! (--I have about eight of 'em.)

I just finished my longest flight yet on the P-40 this A.M.: (I am slowly inching up on my flight time until I find out where I am.) The flight time was 7 min and 42 seconds with a ThunderPower 2200 mah (30C rating). I only used 1350 mah and my amp average was 10.41 amps. (I am using a GWS 9X5 prop.)

CN,

The only reason I went with the DuBro is that was all I could find at the time. If I had found a 3" 3-blade electric spinner, I would have used it. But I can't see ordering just a spinner from an online supplier (support your LHS and all that).

The DuBro looks fine, but you're right, it needs to be a little more pointed.
