Parts needed to complete
- up to 5oz motor
- speed control
- 3 micro servos (hitec 55-ish)
- a micro receiver
- a .21 dia carbon fiber tube
- foam safe glue or hot glue
- packaging tape
- 1/32 or little thinner music wire
- micro control horns
- Y servo connector
The first step is the fuselage. You want to peel the laminate from the side of the foam you are putting glue on, so it doesn't peel up later. You can peel the laminate off the other side too if you want, but I think that adds some strength. So if you are a good pilot and want to save some weight, peel it.
Glue the fuse sides to the fuse bottom piece. Start in the rear, work to the front.

Next up, the main wing, Glue and tape the wing halves together. Sand the leading edges to a point, and reinforce the leading edge with packaging tape. Also reinforce the aileron attachment point with tape so the laminate wont peel up under the hinge and cause flappy ailerons.
Cut a channel for the carbon tube. Tape one side first, then drop in a bunch of glue, then put the spar in, then tape over so its all smooth. If you are planning on going fast with this jet, consider putting more carbon tubing in the wing on a V angle near the leading edge of the wing to reduce wing flap. If you do get wing flap and make sure your control rods are tight with no play in the ailerons.

ailerons and elevator.
Sand a 45 degree angle on the ailerons and elevator at the hinge point.
Wrap the ailerons, elevator and horizontal stabilizer in packaging tape(so the laminate doesnt peel up. I would recommend leaving the laminate on these pieces, because tape for the hinge doesn't stick to the bare foam very well, unless you glue the tape to the foam)
Feel free to sand the leading edge of the horizontal stab and trailing edges.
Tape/hinge elevator to horizontal stab.

Aileron servo installation.
If you plan to go fast, you don't want a long control rod. Mount the servo as close to the aileron as you can, in the center of the aileron. Just trace the servo on the wing, cut it out, and glued and taped the servo in. The good thing about hot glue is it peels right off the servos for next time and it holds good.

Run the servo wires into the fuse, tape the wires down.
Glue down the pods, lining up the back and front respectivly to the wing. Glue the top fuse sides to the pods and then glue the top of the fuse sides to the wing.

You can use a stick mount for your motor, just glue the stick to the wing. You can use a flat plate mount, just mount your motor to a piece of thin ply, then glue the ply to the back. Make the thrust angle straight. I went a little fancy on this mount.
Also, glue on the 2 tail booms exactly on the lines on the wing.

Elevator servos can be mounted in the boom on the side to hide the servo better. This works. I dont like things lopsided though, so I opt to mount the elevator servo in the horizontal stab itself, in the middle. Same as the ailerons, nice and close, glued and taped tight.
When you glue the elevator to the booms, make sure things are squared up.

Make all your connections, tests and do balancing now, before you put the top on.
Peel and laminate together the 4 canopy pieces.
Glue the top on to the 2 sides. Practice putting it in first before you put glue on it, so you know what you're in for. Pre bend it. Glue a little bit at a time.
Sand and glue on the canopy.
You can make a battery access hatch however you want. I suggest cutting around like the top of a pumpkin, big enough. Use a rubber band to hold it in flight.
30" Sea Vixen CG is 5.5 inches back from the leading edge of the wing at the root.
18" Sea Vixen CG is 3.25" inches back from the leading edge of the wing at the root.
16" Sea Vixen CG is 3.0" inches back from the leading edge of the wing at the root.

Testors spray cans work and Krylon "short cuts" spray paint works and is what I use. Colors are limited, but thats about all there is for spray paint safe for foam

Okay I've decided to try this Sea Vixen kit but I'm wondering if anyone has tried using a GWS 40 or 50 mm EDF unit on it yet using either a brushed or brushless motor?
