Introduction

Torque Revolution 4014T/570 and Airboss Elite 80
Motor: Torque Revolution
ESC: Airboss Elite 80
Manufacturer: Extreme Flight RC
Available From: Extreme Flight RC and 3D Hobby Shop

Many people have been praising the Torque line of motors that currently power their foamies and other aircraft all the way up to 55 oz. aerobatic/pattern airplanes. The Torque motors offer exceptional performance at a terrific price, so many have asked, when is the Torque line coming out with a larger brushless outrunner motor?

Well the wait is over. Extreme Flight RC is pleased to announce the new Torque Revolution, the first ever .40-.70 sized Torque brushless outrunner motor. The new Torque Revolution will be distributed through various hobby shops including Extreme Flight RC and 3D Hobby Shop. The Torque Revolution brushless outrunner motor is a breakthrough design that is able to dissipate heat much better than most motors, and it even comes in at a lighter weight than its competitors.

In addition, Extreme Flight RC is introducing the new Airboss Elite 80 speed controller. The Airboss Elite 80 offers a switching BEC that is good for 2s-5s setups eliminating the need for a separate BEC unit or heavy receiver battery found in most electric/glow converted airplanes. When paired up with the new Torque Revolution you have the ultimate power setup that will take that average .40-.70 sized sport, 3D, or pattern airplane and turn it into an ELECTRON BEAST.

A Closer Look

The Torque Revolution comes with:

  • A high quality radial mount
  • Two styles of prop adapters
  • Pre-installed 4mm male bullet connectors
  • Female bullet connectors with heat shrink
  • Mounting screws
  • Shaft bearing

The Torque Revolution

Type: Brushless Outrunner
Size: Replacement for .40-.70-sized glow engines
Recommended Prop Range (Sea Level): 4s LiPos 15x8, 16x8 5s LiPos 14x7, 15x6
Voltage: cell LiPos
Resistance (Ri): 17.5mOhm
Idle Current (Io): 2.70A @ 10V
Shaft Diameter: 6mm (.24 in)
Weight: 280g (13.0 oz)
Turns 14T
Continuous Current: 45A
Maximum Efficiency Current: 85%
Maximum Burst Current: 80A (20 sec)

The Torque Revolution comes with very complete, high quality accessories that allow you the option of mounting the motor in several different ways. The motor shaft can be adjusted by loosening a set screw found in the back of the motor bell. I found the prop adapters were of excellent quality, and it was great to see that the Torque Revolution comes with both the collet and 4 screw adapters as standard equipment with each motor. The Torque Revolution comes with three 4mm male bullet connectors already soldered on to the leads, but it was nice to see the female bullet connectors were included if you need them.

I was able to make an interesting comparison between the new Torque Revolution and a comparable motor from another manufacturer, the Hyperion 4025-10 in a glow to electric conversion Yak-54 that I reviewed last year, and I found some pretty significant differences between the two. The Hyperion 4025-10 motor can be used for converting .40-.70 sized glow/electric planes just like the Torque Revolution motor, but as you can see from the pictures above, the Torque Revolution is smaller in size than the Hyperion motor and weighs almost 3 full ounces less.

The Airboss Elite 80A comes with:

  • Switching BEC for 2s-5s
  • Pre-installed female 4mm bullet connectors
  • Set of 4mm male bullet connectors with heat shrink
  • RF chock ring
  • Arming switch

The new Airboss Elite 80A speed controller offers some terrific safety features not normally found on other brands in this size range. The arming switch can be mounted externally on the airplane, and the included RF chock ring on the extension to the receiver gives the added safety needed for this larger, more powerful electric setup. The Airboss Elite 80 comes with a switching BEC good for LiPo batteries ranging from 2s to 5s. The great thing about the switching BEC feature is that it eliminates the need for a separate UBEC or heavy receiver battery pack.

Putting the Torque Revolution/Airboss Elite 80A to the Test

The Torque Revolution and Airboss Elite 80 are a great choice for many different airplanes. This combo will work great in large trainers, sport, pattern and 3D airplanes that would normally use a glow motor in the .40-.46 2 stroke or .70 4 stroke size range.

For this review, I wanted to demonstrate how this power package could take an OK sports plane and turn it into an absolute ROCKET SHIP. So after doing some research and looking around, I found the perfect airplane to use as the test bed. I found a great deal on a Hangar 9 Aresti at 3D Hobby Shop's Basher's Bargain Bin. This airplane is a solid sports plane with the emphasis on its ability to fly the Basic Sequence. The Hangar 9 Aresti is also a plane that not many people have converted over to electric power.

Prop Testing
Motor: Torque Revolution
ESC: Airboss Elite 80A
Battery Pack: MaxAmps 5s 4000mAh HV 20

Prop: APC 10 x 10E
Watts: 657W
Amps: 33.5A

Prop: APC 11 x 11E
Watts: 785W
Amps: 41A

Prop: APC 12 x 10E
Watts: 739W
Amps: 41.5A

Prop: APC 12 x 12E
Watts: 822W
Amps: 47A

Prop: APC 13 x 10E
Watts: 915W
Amps: 52A

It really couldn't have been any easier to mount the power setup on the Aresti. I used (4) 2 1/2" long 8/32 bolts and 2" of nylon spacers on each of the bolts to mount the Torque Revolution. I dremeled an opening at the bottom of the firewall for battery cooling as well as a location to mount the Airboss Elite 80 speed controller. This process took all of maybe 45 minutes from start to finish and resulted in a very lightweight yet solid motor mounting system. The rest of the plane was built per the manual except for a light plywood battery tray.

I was able to test several different props with the Torque motor (see sidebar) and was impressed with the power the Torque motor put out on each of the props. By far the APC 13 x 10E produced the most power. This is the prop with which I did most of my flying. I had one goal in mind when I was selecting a prop: I wanted a prop that would be able to pull the Aresti around effortlessly while maintaining a good balance between speed and thrust.

In-Flight Report

My finished weight ready-to-fly (RTF) for the Aresti came in at 5 lbs. 6oz. The only thing left to do was to put the motor through some in-flight testing. The first thing I noticed upon running the Torque Revolution was how incredibly powerful it sounds on the 5S battery pack and the 13" prop. This setup gave the Aresti unlimited vertical and plenty of SPEED. Tons of SPEED.

In addition, the Torque Revolution has the fantastic ability to dissipate heat during even the warmest days and highest power settings. As you will notice in the video (see below), after flying the Aresti around for 7-8 minutes at very high throttle settings, the Torque Revolution comes down at low to moderate temperatures. While this motor is capable of producing up to 1300W the speed produced using the 13" prop was simply INCREDIBLE!!

The Torque Revolution brushless motor far exceeds the performance levels of any comparable glow setup on the market today. I found that the throttle response of the Airboss Elite 80 speed controller was outstanding, and I found no need to change any of the default settings with this setup. The Airboss Elite 80 ESC has stayed at mostly ambient temperatures with good airflow coming through the cooling hole cutout.

The Cost Factor

Think it's too expensive to convert your .40-.70 glow plane over to electric? The cost of flying .40 sized electric airplanes has really gone down over the last several years, and with the increase in both electric technology and electric distributors and manufacturers there really hasn't been a better time to join the electric scene. The new Torque Revolution and Airboss Elite 80 can be picked up for a very reasonably priced introductory combo cost of $219.99. There are many LiPo manufacturers out that that are also selling very affordable 5s packs including MaxAmps, Hyperion, and the soon to be released 3D Hobby Shop battery packs. There are also very affordable chargers that can easily handle charging these packs such as the TP 535C. There really hasn't been a better time to fly electric airplanes than today.

The Torque line of motors and speed controllers also has the best backed customer support group I have ever seen in the industry. Should you ever need help with your Torque motor or Airboss ESCs, the support for this product is phenomenal.

Conclusion

The Torque Revolution brushless outrunner motor is by far the best performing motor I have ever flown in a .40-.70 sized converted glow or electric airplane. The motor produces a tremendous amount of power in a very lightweight unit. The Torque Revolution has the ability to maintain relatively low temperatures during the warmest of days and can be pushed without breaking a sweat.

The Airboss Elite 80 ESC is the perfect complement to the Torque Revolution; they are in-synch from the moment they are plugged in together. At the introductory price of $219.99, the Torque Revolution and Airboss Elite 80 will be finding their way onto the front of many airplanes.

Based on the performance I have seen with this motor and speed controller, it is clear to see that this combo will be leading the way for affordable, high performance, maintenance-free glow/electric conversion projects for some time to come.

Pluses:

  • Complete high quality included hardware and accessories
  • ALOT of power in a light motor
  • Ability to dissipate heat
  • Very reasonable price
  • Customer support after the sale

Minuses:

  • NONE!!

Brad,

Sure, how about a picture to tell you. Probably close to 10.0 oz. with the prop adapter attached.

2.2 for the ESC
11.8 for the motor with radial mount, prop washer and nut. The way it mounts in the plane.

Get you a Hyperion Emeter. Point it at the prop, run up the motor, hit the hold button, throttle down, save into one of the 5 memory's and move on to the next one. You will have amps, volts, watts and rpm.
