Slow Stick X "Nite Stik" Build :D

I've always wanted to build a true 4+ channel night flyer. Met up with James Karpy from Millenium RC just before SEFF 07 and found what I wanted! The SSX! I asked him to make me one but not cover it for SEFF and he happily obliged. So now the work on the SSX Nite Stik begins..... more to come .....

I laid a sheet of printer paper over it and you could see the light through it. Those pics were taken in the day time so they didn't show up very well. The wing will be transparent red underneath one side and transparent yellow under the other. The top will be a thin white or clear from the spar to the trailing edge and from the spar up to the Leading edge will match the bottom. Along with some carbon fiber covering on the tips and middle. Should be pretty visible in the dark. I may have to position the LEDs so that they alternate pointing up and down to get the full effect of the light. If it were not so time consuming I would have put one pointing up and one pointing down in every space, but that would have been 40 LEDs! And another day of soldering!

That'll be plenty bright enough. That's the same way as I set up my night flyer.

I hear you about all the soldering... what a pain!

Your covering scheme sounds good. On my night flyer, I have transparent clear on the bottom of the wing, and white solite on the top of the wing. Mine is used for lazy circles in a lawn chair with the tranny in one hand and a beverage in the other, so I spend most of my time looking at the bottom of the wing. `

Are you putting any lights in the tail? I did on mine, and I find it really helps with orientation. (you get much better perspective if you can also see where the tail is in relation to the wing).

Nice! I have some glo wire that I had on the original GWS slow stick that I'm gonna put on the fuse and tail. It'll probably end up brighter than the wing! lol Do you know the intensity rating of the LEDs in that plane? The ones I got are 8000 I think.

It's not that hard to do, just time consuming. I talked to James Karpy, Pres. of millinneum r/c just before SEFF about the SSX and just had to get one. We finally met at SEFF and he brought me one. James is really a great guy! He is also selling a Micro SSX due out soon...it is gonna be a must have also. I think it is about 1/3 the size of the SSX. He had both at SEFF and let me and the other hounds fly them...they are awesome machines! The micro is fast. Definately not your fathers Slow Stick for either one!

She's lit!! :D

Could not wait any longer! It was not dark yet so I closed all the blinds. Had a little drama...fill y'all in later!

OK about the "drama" ....... After I checked and double checked about 5 more times to make sure all the LEDs were lit, I covered the entire wing. And, yup, you guessed it! When I got done, 2 were out. So I cut the covering on those spots off, and re-soldered (praying the whole time that I did not touch the covering with the iron) them. Then I patched the covering back up. I was suprised how well I did! You can hardly see the patches at all! And I had one of those " I'm good!!!" moments, and the drama was over!!
