Great, I like diversity. The FG/balsa/FG sandwich must be as strong as the molded wing (similar construction method).

BTW, I'm also working on a balsa pod - "sliced bread" type construction and Rendy is working on his molded pod. Keep the goodies coming .....

Rendy has the skill and I have the tool .....

I got something similar to this needle file set - http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...itemnumber=468

A few pass with square file, it's done.

Well......, Rendy's cut is cleaner though.

I must say that I am very impressed with this design. I like the covering material. is it very smoth surfaced?

does anyone have a link for a supplier of this covering material?

The surface is not as smooth as film covering. The surface texture is just like the Ripstop kite.

More detail on Icarex supplier and covering method can be found here - http://www.tufflight.com/icarex.html

A word of warning: The "1/2 oz" weight is NOT the actual weight of this stuff. I weighed it when I used it for an IFO -- it's actually more like 1 oz/yd^2, which is about the same as Ultrakote Lite.

Perhaps the "1/2 oz" refers to the weight of the woven fabric before the polyester film is added to it.

Icarex

A quick comparison of actual covering weight from my build-up DLG's (normalized to Manta wing size of 2 X 387 in2)

......................................Actual ...... Actual ......... Retailer Info
So-lite ........................... 15 g ....... 0.89 oz/yd2 .... 0.6 oz/yd2
Icarex only ..................... 18.4g ..... 1.09 oz/yd2 ..... 0.5 oz/yd2
Icarex w/ 3M77 & CA......... 30 g ...... 1.78 oz/yd2 ..... NA

Polyester is one thing and may be color is another one for the difference between actual and retailer info (http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/show...3&postcount=1).

The tradeoff is "ripstop capability" + "biased covering" vs. "15g weight penalty" + "surface texture". Perhaps this is why Betamax choose to use Icarex/Mylar combination ......... Your choice.

BTW, Rendy is with you on So-lite/Ultrakote-lite...... .

Rendy, with film covering and ligter tail feathers, your AUW target has been re-adjusted from 9.9 oz to 9.0 oz ........ ..... With 3.35 oz/ft2 wing loading, it's going to be a sweet Manta .....

Wing Tip Shaping

For those who do not like free-hand sanding on wing tips, here is something might be helpful.

The tip has been "sliced" into three-piece contours. Stack three layers of 1/8" balsa to form the tip. R+1 and R+2 is above chord line and R-1 below. Sand to shape until the ridge disappears.
