i flew the demon again yesterday with the rates dialed in a bit better, it was a much easier flight. i still need to get some more of the expo out but i happily did a few WOT passes and didn't crap my pants. i even had the guts to do a little loop and a barell roll or two the motor esc and batteries all came down cool.

to me that means it's time to FPV it

i cut in the camera last night, and wired up the super simple osd to monitor the video battery and flight battery voltage.

took it out i took the missus with me as i needed her to verify that the FPV system worked. i just set her up with the goggles in the car as it was a bit chilly out in the field...

the launch was a bit hectic as i kind of limp wristed it and i had dialed my ailerons down really low, but it did airborne pretty well and i took it up for a few WOT passes, staying nice and high ... there were a bunch of dark clouds about and it can get REALLY hard to see when its high up and far away and on an acute angle ... the cross section can get a little like looking at a razor side on haha

so i lost sight of it

..
...

...

..

AAAAAGH!

i looked away from it for a second and when i looked back it had vanished :P ..... at least 5 seconds of blind flying ... it felt like forever! anyway by the time i had accepted it was going to be found at the bottom of a crater i spotted it again!!! about 200m away and spiraling on a 30 degree angle towards terra firma. i was so pissed at myself for flying so badly i just could not enjoy it anymore and came in for a semi-rushed landing

i normally like to land in front of myself by the demon just does not wash off speed and being my 3rd ever landing for her of course i overshot and landed behind where i was looking, right into the only pile of dirt in the surrounding 1km. POOF! a massive cloud of dust and we are down.

no damage done, the FPV system worked perfectly, just a very dirty plane and a pilot who needs to FOCUS!

i am an idiot.

i wish i had video from it haha

i need a recorder for the video receiver, i use the gopro on the ZII. this one would not enjoy having a brick taped to its top :P

what would have made that flight even worse if i crashed- if the missus was sitting next to me i could have immediately grabbed the goggles off her and recovered....

"the motor esc and batteries all came down cool."

Which motor, prop and which Ice you using? I need to start thinking about ordering for my D40 FPV build and plan to copy yours.
Thanks

you need to know mine is designed to never put stress on any of the components, so it is absolutely rock solid without fear of killing any of the components in the power system.

so basically it is not as powerful or as fast as most people like their demons set up.

it is a great "learner" demon though, and i am planning on just flying for 5 mins WOT, so it is perfect for me.

batts - 2x 2s 5000 40 -50c turnigy (for 4s 5000) hobbyking http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html
motor - mega 16/25/2 EC, swinging an APC 6x4 sport prop, also has an extra heat sink http://www.effluxrc.com/MEGA-16-25-2...16-25-2-EC.htm http://www.effluxrc.com/28mm-Heat-Si...ned-2836HS.htm
ESC - Castle ICE 100 http://www.effluxrc.com/Castle-Phoen...C-CCICE100.htm
BEC- Castle 10A http://www.effluxrc.com/CC-BEC-CCBEC.htm
Servos - 9kg mg http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=8776

so this system could run 5 cells or a steeper prop, but i do not need the speed, i would rather have the peace of mind

..... until i get bored with it in a few months and yeah it will see a bigger prop :P

edit:
it also needed about 300g or 10oz of lead in the nose to get it to balance.... so i would say you could go way bigger on the batteries without affecting the flying weight, you would just need less lead.

you don't want to cut the motor in very far at all, that spoils the handling and strength of the wing.

it stil flies fine at over 70oz.

remember the motor will take at least a month to arrive as it is a custom order, so order it early

success & disaster in 4 minutes

Well today was the maiden. Blue skies, moderate temps, steady breeze and knocking knees. I was really nervous about the launch ( Peter, I couldn't wait to make a launcher). After all the advise from you guys and reading and watching videos I decided to go for it.

Had a big audience at work at 11:00 am. My left hand fed in 3/4 throttle and righty gave it a good overhand toss. Slight drop in altitude, maybe a foot, then off she flew. So awesome to see my last months work fly away screaming to be free.

Did about 3 mid speed passes trying to get my right thumb back on the stick properly. The crowd was into it. You all are right ... nothing sounds or flies like a Ritewing. Worked my way up to 3/4 speed, the whole time the crowd canting GIVE HER THE OATS......FULL THROTTLE. (These guys are not wing fliers). Somewhere in all the excitement I forgot that this was my test flight, it was flying so nice. I gave in and fed her all the oats. The crowd cheered as I passed overhead, then cheered even more when I backed out and did a graceful climbing banked turn followed by a 30 foot
white
smoke
trail.
AAAGGGGHHHHH! Didn't lose total power but I'm sure the motor is shot. Burn marks on the front and back of the can.

So , lesson learned. DO NOT let the crowd get to you. Have a plan before you start and stick to it. Do not run 6 cells 4500 with a Mega 16/40/1.5RC on a APC 6.5 x 3.7 sport combat prop without careful consideration.

Anyone got a motor ? LOL

Sorry ,my camera man is a turd. Not worth showing.

brolley,
sorry your maiden didnt work out the way you intended !
Looks like you made passes and reduced throttle for your turns, but obviousely it wasnt enough to cool your motor.

My only question is why didnt you run a 6x4 Sport prop instead ?

I should have tried more, I suppose.
We knew it would be close.

What motor do you want ?
I am willing to send you any motor I have untill you get yours rewound.
Mine are new, so you can have it in less than 1 week...................... if you send me the rebuild one, you can keep my new one
