The ole J250 has seen better days and multiple flights.
Anyway the plane flew great, smooth is a good word.
The only problem was a short "very short" flight time because of a weak Lipo combined with the sp280.
Anyway it was enough to see that it is a great plane.
Just need a newer lipo.
Thanks Tony for a winner.
Ray

Fantastic Ray. I'm so glad it flew so well for you, you really sweated the detail on this one. I'm glad it was worth it.

Not to take away from the planes design at all.
Could those here who have had good luck with there BB please post
the motor, esc, and lipo combo they are using?
I'm curious to see what others are using.
I'm thinking if I gotta get a new lipo, I might try to upgrade to a brushless setup.
I have a BP21 but I'm afraid that would be overkill for my BB.
Thanks Ray

Bob, isn't it remarkable what passes for a primary trainer? If every beginner could get a properly trimmed Blu-Baby, or GPW's Trainer 1, or STC, or one of Gene Bond's floaters, we would have a lot more people successfully partaking in RC.

Pat has it right. Build a BB and give it away. Keep one for yourself as therapy, but give the others to newbies that need a plane to learn the basics on.

Tony
Tony... You are right about these designs and how their low cost and simplicity can make them available to a lot of people. I know there a several models described in this forum that would hook any novice on RC and foamies for a minimum investment. I am going to follow in Pat's footsteps and see how I can give some of this pleasure to some others. Bob

Ray... My BluBaby has a 2712-12 outrunner from Heads Up Rc off E-Bay. My motor runs a GWS 9050 prop and uses a WOW 1000 mah lipo and a WOW 30 amp esc. This setup is probably overkill, but I have tried standardize my electonics as much as possible. It is supposed to deliver 18 oz of thrust (although I haven't tried to measure it) BB Birddog II weighs 11 oz AUW. Whatever the actual thrust is, the plane has has plenty of power and will loop from level flight. The plane doesn't seem to care for the extra power. Hope this helps.Bob

The BP21 uses a 8x4hd prop with 3 lipos, pulls around 13amps static.
with a small lightweight lipo I could make it work maybe.
Anybody else want to post there motor, lipo setup??
Thanks Ray

Hey, Ray!

BB #1:
(From memory...hope this is right)
Custom CDR Single Stator
Thunderbird 9 esc
8040 Prop
2s 800 mah
(Friend I gave it to is using a 2s 1200 mah)

BB#2
Westport CDR 22.5mm/20T
Hextronic 10A esc
9047 prop
2s 650 and 2s 800

BB#3
(Still under construction)
Hextronic KA20-50 Kv 1088 (s/b equiv to Hacker's A20-50S)
Hexatonic 10A esc
9038 prop is recommened
3s battery is recommended
(I'll use a 3s 650 mah or a 2s 650 mah)

Haven't flown #3 yet, but it s/b an efficient little motor. I thought the little Westport motor and 9047 on BB#2 felt perfect. One thing I know is that I prefer the 9" props over the 8" props on the BB. I also like to use the light, low amp draw motors and lean toward the 2s batteries. In my experience, the BB doesn't need a lot of power.

Hope this helps.

Pat

Ray, the BP-21 is serious overkill for the little Blu-Baby and is very likely to tear the wings off. As you can see from the above posting, it was the design motor for the 52" BB Aerial Photgraphy plane, which also carried 6 ounces of camera. It flew reasonably well with both the 52" Sport Wing and the 60" undercambered Heavy Lifter wing.

For a brushless motor choice, the little Hextronic Blue Wonder would be hard to beat in this plane and even it is overpowered. Remember, it was designed to fly with the little GWS IPS which only produces 4 ounces thrust.

Just finished Blu-Baby #3 (except for a couple of graphics details). Maidened it just before darks. What can I say? If flies like a BB! Rock solid stability. Love this plane! Been working in the yard most of the day, so I'm beat. Will post pix and details in the next day or two. Thanks, Tony!

Pat congrats on BB 3. Looking forward to the pics. Oh... about that yardwork. Have you considered foamenating your lawn? It's great a little work with the heat gun and some cheap green latex paint and your ready to get back to flying BB's. Bob

I did a taxi test on my red & yellow Blu-Baby and real pleased with the power from the 24 Hex. Its broke down and packed ready for Fla. Also built a Slow Stick with a EMax CF 2822 39 gram and tested it also. Hit full throttle and it jumped off the grass in 2 feet.
You guys might want to check it out cause its STRONG. Cheap also

Taxi Tests My BB won't taxi, just takes off and goes. Have a great trip and don't forget the pics. We'll need to do a montage of all the BB's for Tony one of these days. Bob

I swapped out the SP280 for a IPS-A gws drive with a 9x7 prop.
Using a 860ma thunderpower 2cell lipo,
Has good power, and I reduced the control throws but it wants to seem a bit tail heavy or sorta jerky when I give it up elevator.
How many mm from the leading edge of the wing are you fellows getting CG??
I may have to move my battery slot a tad farther forward.
Thanks Ray
