The Schneider Cup Seaplane Race

Ok maybe it's going on and I'm missing out here??
But if not I think it would be great.
Have a look at these sites and lut's talk.

http://j.parsons.edu/~virapat/the_ch...e/Savoia1.html
or
http://www.angelfire.com/va2/aerodrome/r3c/r3c.html
or being Built and in CNC...
http://www.rcmodels.net/cnc/hobby/result.htm

It's got it all Speed! Scale. Kool planes.
Water action.
Pick you're plane there so many!
A yearly central race would be the ultimate Goal.
Along with a Trophy.
Soooo?

Schneider Cup Seaplane Race

At one time they used to hold a Schneider cup race at Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Not sure if this is the upcomming event.

November 8 - 10, 2002 Fri-Sun

18th Annual London Bridge Seaplane Classic
Desert Hawks RC Club of Havasu
Fri. & Sat: 8am-5pm
Sun: 8am-1:30pm
Nautical Inn Resort, 1000 McCulloch Blvd.
Contact: (928) 680-9711 Charles Beardsley

Were you specifically talking about an electric event if so what size and how are you going to handicap it so that every one doesn't have to go out and build the final race year aircraft. A Sopwith against the last year Supermarine wouldn't be a fair race

And I don't know about you but if I built one I would probably be the only one in the Edmonton area so I wouldn't get much racing in.

Thanks Guy for the info. I'll check it out.
Havasu Ya baby Love that city! A Yearly trip there in Nov don't sound bad at all.
As to rules I guess #1 is the plane must of gualified or raced.
Motors should even up the field. Don't forget those days each year was a HP race. So cap it with a 500/Can size. And a cell count of say 12-14.
This is just some idea's coming from me to stir things up. Of course a scale would top it off.
These Modelers in Havasu may have it all done already

My modeling preference still goes to the Macchi Castoldi MC-72 with counter-rotating props,

the November Havasu fly in is a 3 day fun fly. they put on a pylon race during the event. it's a timed event around 2 pylons. not sure if they still do the race anymore. btw this years event was cancelled due to a fire at the hotel and remodeling.

here's a pic of the Macchi i raced to a win in 1996.

with the progress in e power systems it should work well.

the race was timed from the beach launch to beach recovery. i don't remember how many laps they ran,10? maybe. the course was large. pylons about 250-300 meters apart..........gregg

In response to Guy Fawcett; well there might be two of us in the Edmonton area, but that still dosn't sort out how equality can be gained. Actually, I'm having a lot of fun flying my 60 slimer powered Schneider Sport 60 made up to look like a Supermarine S5.
Electric on water, sounds like we're talking large scale here.
If anyone would like to see some original footage of the Schneider races from the 30's see if you can find the movie "Spitfire", staring David Niven and Leslie Howard. It's the life sotory of Reginald Mitchell, designer of the Spitfire and also the later Schneider Racers. I bought a copy at Wal-Mart on the bargain rack of old classics. It's not great, ie. b&w and chopped up a bit, but still an excellent movie if you like that kind of stuff.

Gregg's Macchi shure looks like a scale that would work for Electric power(500) size can.
Chop the length of the race a few laps, Hmmm?
Start and finish off the beach would make for a
fun race.
Good input so far. Anyone with some good links to the real thing?

Sorry this one's in Italian:

http://aeroweb.lucia.it/it/history/mc72.htm

Ing Mario Castoldi went on to design later the MC 205 Veltro, best italian fighter of wwii (although with DB engine)...

An electric model requires the design of a special gb for the two concentric counter-rot props...

A plan, and I think later, a kit weere offered for the Schneider 60. I believe it took a geared cobolt 40 or 60. The plane was the same layout but of light weight construction as the gas version. I think I'll stay with slimers when they get that big. Too bad the kit (company?) were discontinued.
After I test flew a schneider 60 with a 60FS I knew I had to have one. Fortunately one came up at a local auction and I got mine at a real deal. I'm using Sea Commander floats on mine which look and work real well.

I think if there kept to a small size hovering around 40>45" max Span. And mostly Foam Construction a S500 should do nicely.

Soooo got a responce from
18th Annual London Bridge Seaplane Classic
Desert Hawks RC Club of Havasu
Seems past events were fantastic full media events drawing hundreds to the Airshow.
Well this year the race is off. and the reason seems to be it's a GIANT SCALE GAS EVENT(Period)

OK hold it you're talking $$$ anyone got a guess $$$ for one GIANT SCALE plane?Eh!
Great Spectator Sport . But no Planes to Fly.
Hmmm go figure.
Gotta think small and cheep here.
Foam cores and floats.
