the E-zone needs a simple java chat room!

How many of us check for posts more than a few times a day???. How many of us need an answer to an assembling or building question RIGHT NOW.. and have to wait for someone to reply to a post???... I don't know anything about the difficulties involved w/ setting up a chat, but I'm sure it would be a very busy and sucessful room!.... If anyone else agrees.say so on this thread and maybe we can pressure the powers that be to create one!

I agree that would be a wonderful addition to the E-zone.

This comes up every month or so.

We want to run a chat but are too busy working on other parts of the site right now.

Can you recommend a program that you think we should use?

What does everyone think of the "Melange" chat server?
Any experience?
Jim- Any idea what kind of data throughput and storage you use/need?

I can understand some people wanting a chat room, but I don't understand how it would make getting a question answered any faster. If a person who knew the answer was online, why would he be any slower answering on a forum?

I personally don't like chat rooms and wouldn't be on there. Too much like a frenetic conference call. I admit I'm at the question asking phase rather than the answering phase, but you probably would get a wider audience with knowledge specific to your question on one of the categorized forums. From what I've seen of chat rooms your serious question would be buried amidst the inane banter of one liners.

RB

Hello friends

A chat sounds great to me, as a fill in tell the Ezone starts its own, some one could open a room in MSN or Yahoo Chat and post a link here. Id be happy to do it, but since Im on a dial up connection I could only keep it open while I am on, it would be better hosted by someone with a full time connection.

Or we could just invade the chat at RCOnline.

Just as a note, I dislike like the software that RCOline uses for their chat.

What I like about the forums is that I can search throught them all and find topics and ideas, and opinions that I can use. If everybody is into chatting, then I will not be able to read what people discussed when I was not online. I agree that having a chat can speed up the question/answer or opinion communications but we should try to think of the consequences of having a chat and do a cost/benefit and not just the benefit before we inmplement anything. It would be nice to have chat and posting.

Hello,

I'm sure that that is what Tic had envisaged - a chat room as well as the topic discussions already there . . .
That's certainly what I had in mind
I love reading through all the different topics while I'm supposed to be helping with the housework !

Keven.
